I just bought a Rock Island 10 22 for the fun of it. I found the following problems.

1. The stock was soooo tight it was extremely hard to remove the barrel action assembly from it. Removed the excess wood and left over burrs from manufacturer.
2. Magazine well was soooo tight it was hard to get the hot lips mags inside. Again removed some wood.
3. Bought an aftermarket Ruger 10 22 scope mount bracket with screws. The Rock Island uses a different size and pitch of thread. Also had to drill out two of the mount holes so the screws wood install squarely.
4. Tried installing an aftermarket magazine release so it is easer to get the mags out. I hate the normal mag release on a Ruger 10 22. I had to do some filing in the elongated hole in the aftermarket release so it would fit properly.

I have mounted a red dot scope on the gun. Off to the indoor range tomorrow to try it out.

I admire your courage for posting this. This should bring on the "why buy a copy when you can......", and so on. :p

I have one that I removed the WW2 Russian tank primer paint from and put a few coats of BLO. The wood is actually quite light in colour and may have some "bondo" repairs. I put a scope on mine and have shot it a bit, but few gophers around last summer.

We sold two at the Yorkton show this past weekend. I have seven 10/22's, all different, so I do have some idea of the differences. I bought one for myself to try it out. I have used a stainless carbine since 1997 for gopher shooting, unaltered except for the bolt closing feature.

Edit: The scope is a BURSON Eagle Eye 2.5-8x32. Uncommon as they come!

This is the Rock Island in all its glory:

Yep i had to go to the local bolt supplies store and get the proper bolts. Rail fits perfectly. Also the reciever bolt hole in a ruger stock needs to be drilled larger for the ria bolt if your going to swap stocks. Its a tight fit but works.

$199.00 for mine ;) No problems

I have personally seen two, TWO, that needed to have the barrel hole re bored straight and sleeved to fit a real 10/22 barrel. The ria barrel shank is also larger than a standard 10/22 barrel, so unless you're going to either bore out and sleeve the receiver, or turn down and sleeve the barrel, they won't fit.

I was looking at one of these at a local gun shop and it was bar none the most poorly finished firearm i have ever seen and the crown looked like it was cut with an axe. I think they ask way too much for them.

I've looked at a few, with that crappy looking reddish finish on the stock. I can't imagine why anyone would pay over $200 for one when for a few bucks more, you can get a quality Ruger product. (that you are unlikely to regret buying)

Yes they do ask too much for them new.

I 100% regret buying my ruger 10/22. It was a pos from day 1. I got a lemon that is a tribute to the great QC they have these days. I bought a RIA (for my daughter) cause i got it for $150 with mags and ammo. So far zero issues but im only running 10 round rotary mags. I put it in a 10/22 wood stock cause the factory ria is garbage lol

Ran it last week with the 10 round mag no probs. picked up a BC steel lip (plasti dipped pink lol). Ill give it shot see if this one will like the aftermarket mags cause i tried every mag available in my ruger and it wouldnt feed a thing except rotary 10 rounders. I think my daughter will love it!!!

The general internet consensus is that quality control has taken a dive across the board with all products producing more duds then ever before. This is not exclusive to the firearms world.

Have Ruger 10/22's gone downhill in quality? Maybe a stupid question...years ago, they were a good rifle.

ive got a stable full of 10/22's.
one from the 80's, 90's, 2000's and 2 recent additions (one stock 2013 and one 2014 Anv Ed)

i see nothing wrong with the new ones.
ive taken them down and inspected every bolt and screw, all are fine.
im not a big fan of the new plastic trigger groups but even the gunsmiths are saying they are better so..... meh

so when asked if the new 10/22 offerings are poor in QC all i can do is base it off the ones i have and my answer is no, they are good.
people have to keep in mind that you can get a lemon anywhere at any time.

i have contemplated picking up a RIA to play with but after hearing about the differences it would do me no good as all the extra parts i have are Ruger so i would end up having to work on and fit each piece. with all of the after market parts for the 10/22 that in itself makes it worth it to pay the extra $50 and get a real 10/22 just so you can play Lego and add anything you want with no problems.

the RIA I have everything but the barrel from a 10/22 will fit on it, I put an extended mag release and bolt handle, boyd stock, also it shoots from every mag I've given it. Every company has one off bad guns. #### happens.

my 10/22 takedown has been perfect. great gun and something i would recommend to anyone. my other 10/22 is fully custom without a single ruger product in or on it.

Took my RIA to the range and tried it. Mag problems. I had to remove some more wood from the magazine well area so the magazines would fit loosely. The Butler Creek (BC)10 round steel lip mag works flawless. The BC 25 round Hot Lips do NOT work. It tends to jam after 10 rounds. A few times you have the empty case sideways an a live round almost in the chamber. I going to buy a 25 Steel Lip and see if they work.

Another problem I found with the RIA was the extractor. It was slightly oversize. When the bolt went forward it would fail to close completely. The extractor would not go into the slit in the barrel. I did some draw filing on it to thin it out and the bolt closes correctly.

I also draw filed the top of the bolt so it was flat and then it also cycled well.

Overall if someone says would I recommend a RIA rifle, I would say NO.

Oh well I guess my gun was made on a Friday afternoon.
