The new Rock Island Armory Tactical .45's that Arms East has look like a great way to break into the 1911 game without breaking the bank. What I can find on the web seems pretty positive, has anyone here got some first hand experience to share?

me in another thread said:
Isn't the RIA 1911 the same as the Tanfoglio 1911?
ie. from the Philipines

IIRC , I found that the RIA nd the Tanfoglio come from the same Philipine manufacturer (Armscor) and are assembled/finished at the Tanfoglio/RIA plant.

Should be roughly same as the Tanfoglio 1911 that Freedom Ventures sells.
A few people on the board have then.

Rock Island Armory is the same thing as Tanfoglio Witness 45, STI Spartan, Charles Daly, etc. They are all made in the Phillipines by Armscor.

Doesn't Tanfoglio just make Airsoft guns? I'm in the market for my first 1911 and have been looking very closely at the IRA Tactical as well. My spending limit is $600, while the Norinco is about $400 (including tax/ship), the upgrades I would most likely want will cost over $200. With the IRA Tactical I will already have better sights, beavertail safety grip, skeleton hammer/trigger, and a much nicer finish (IMO). It comes with a full length guide rod, but that is easily replaced with a standard guide rod and plug (If you wanted to). Personally I like the Idea of not messing with a Norinco and spending more money, but getting what I want right out of the box (Just how I feel, once I get into 1911's more, I may want to buy a Norinco and add my own little touches). I did my research, and found out most people who own one have nothing but great things to say about the gun and apparently IRA's customer service is great (I believe all there guns carry a lifetime warranty). Anyway, to make a long story short, I contacted the guys at Arms-East and I'm in the process of getting one of the Tactical models. When it arrives I'll have pics posted and my opinions on fit/finish as well as a range report once I've shot it enough......now to get more people on the bandwagon so I'm not alone! lol

Look up "Rock Island Tactical 1911" on youtube.com, there is a fellow who has about 10 videos all dedicated to the gun...

I don't think many people have seen these, and I don't have time to get a range report in until after Wed at best, so for anyone willing to take a few pics of theirs and a post them with a bit of a unbiased range report, please email me.

I've given a couple of them a look over, and for the price they seem quite nice. There are some more pics on the site now. I like the all matte parkerized finish, the match trigger is good (no firing pin safety), the machining is quite clean, the fit of the grip safety is a bit 'generous' IMO, but they function properly. The stock grips look good but are too wide for my taste. I've got some thinner grips around that I'm going to throw on one.

I'm going to run a few matches with one and see how it performs. I don't anticipate any problems.

From reading the American sites, people seem to be liking them.

Detailed pics are available for the asking.

Best regards,
DT
