Hey I've got one of these older home build hawken guns hanging on my wall that was my father in laws. I've been thinking of shooting it but have never been involved in shooting black powder. I fully ripped the gun apart and cleaned it all up. The barrel exterior has some u fortunate rust I could not get off but it cleaned up pretty good.
Great hunting story and pictures...Congratulations Man...Been so long since I capped off the old Hawken that she has grown hair down the bore and the brass trim has turned blue...Your hunt brings back a lot of fond memories...Thanks.
Ahhh, the sound of the cap busting and the sight of the flash , the smoke and the smell of black powder in the earlier fall air...
Nice buck and congrats too.
Thanks for Sharing.

Like I figured, it was brutal. The first kilometer was through the bush and down the ridge, it was pretty easy going. The tore up road was another kilometer and a half, it was awful. That soul destroying, two handed, walking backwards type dragging that just drains your will to live. Wherever the road had crossed a drainage or creek they dug a ditch or ravine and I had to drag the deer through about a half dozen of these. Besides all of this I had to use a chunk of rope to sling the Hawken, which was about as comfortable as it sounds. All part of the game my friends! Cant wait for next year!
