Romanian 7.62x39 surplus

I ordered mine today, I'll pick it up when I drive to Ontario in July.

To find out if it's corrosive or not, whoever bought it with steel cases, pick up an empty cartridge casing from the range and take it home with you. Check back in a weeks time and there should be rust in it.

just fire the empty case over a bare nail. if corrosive, it will rust in a day or so.

The lebaron ad on their website clearly states that this ammo is non-corrosive. But whether that is true or not .......?

Lebaron Ottawa has got more in, about 2 skids of this ammo in stock, i just got some of the brass cased Romanian ammo from them.

Just got back from Le baron with a case. Opened it up, found a can opener but no can.
It had boxes of 20rds each, marked 68 / 22. No red ring or paint on them. the FMJ bullet was magnetic (steel core?) but the case was brass looking and non-magnetic.

The wooden box it came in was poorly reassembled by whomever had opened it and slapped stickers on each 20rd box. the lid was missing a chunk of wood and the nails and screws were hardly in place. the whole thing was held together by a metal band around the middle. but who cares, at around $0.15 a cartridge- they could hand it to me in a bag and i'd be happy.

I wonder if the Romanians changed their production methods and material THAT MUCH from year to year.

I went to LeBaron in Montreal and ask about the ammo. The guy at the counter said the ammo was surplus and corrosive. I told him the website said non-corrosive but he said that surplus ammo was corrosive. So at $ 206 it's a good deal but clean your rifle soon after getting back from the club.

Also Lebaron just received american made Winchester 7,62x39 mm 123gr soft point hunting ammo at $23 a box of 20. They couldn't ordered it from the U.S. because the regulation on military ammo export laws. But they are back in stock. They feed better in my cz-527 than the Hornady soft point because they lack the paint on the casing. Probably a tight chamber cz-527..

I've noticed that the Romanian stuff has a kinda weird smell. I would describe it as an herby, plant smell. maybe patchouli or something- which would make sense if they were trying to repel insects... I know that you're not supposed to put any kind of oil or lubrication on ammunition. I'm going to go smell it again

I just ordered my second case from LeBaron's. From what they say, and what I've found, it's non corrosive.
Some even claim it's FMJBT. When I have a chance I will pull a bullet and see.

Is there a litmus type test I wonder for testing for corrosive residue?
simple chemistry I assume.
