I recently acquired this Romanian M44. Had a bit of a chuckle when I looked at the markings. A 1954 Izhevsk? Huh? Turns out the Romanian arrow in a triangle is very similar to the Izhevsk arrow.

So, mystery solved; a nice 1954 Romanian M44

Romanian "diamond c" stock mark.

Very high quality finish; deep bluing, smooth surfaces, mirror bore.

As an example, here's a comparison between the Romanian's trigger and that of a 1943 Izhevsk M38:

And finally, a Com Bloc family photo:

Yes, congratulations on that Romanian. Those are very hard to find down here in the states also. Most we do see turn up, are all in very nice condition. Very few around.
In fact, some owners have stated they ordered a Russian as advertised by an importer and got an unexplainable Romanian. It is said they are very accurate for an M44.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

The more I research this thing the more interesting it gets. It seems Romania made about 70 000 of these and then had everyone else's M44's foisted on them as the SKS came on stream.

I can see myself having a great deal of fun tracking down a Romanian sling and pouches. :)

Anyway, I finally got a sunny day and took some better pictures of the markings.

Nice, I have 1955 Romainian M44. They are interesting in there history. My bolt is made in hungary, 02 stamped. Matches the rifle but goes with the story of Romaiania getting all the left overs from the other countries.

Here is a real nice Romanian Leather Sling that would look at home with your rifle. A few of these came in with Romy M44 and later a few SKS years ago. These may well be the real original Romanian issue. They are rather rare, but do turn up on ebay once in awhile. Some times for sale on a Gun Board. A bit expensive for a sling. But rarity dictates I guess. I used to have three, but sold them when I started collecting Swedes.
