What is the difference between the 17's??

What is a better choice for plinkin and maybe woodchucks type of thing. A 17 or a 22mag.

I currently have a 10/22 but want to pick up something else.

Best 22 lr ammo for small game??

Thoughts/advice?

I'll try to answer some, but there are many knowledgeable people here aside from me! :p

In short (no pun intended), the .17 M2 is based on the .22 LR case, while the .17 HMR is based on the .22 WMR case. The .17 HMR is longer-range, and more supply of it is available, or so it seems these days....;)

Precision/long-range accuracy seems to go to the .17 HMR, while power seems to go the .22 Mag. That's the "brief" answer....:D

Might we ask the purpose? It'll help us in recommending things for you! :)

Feel ree to ask...the more information you supply us with, the better we can respond! :welcome: to rimfire! ;)

My 22 WMR jacketed pointed is weak as all heck, and has a low "grain count". It barely cracks the ceramic disks. It also happens to be sold at Wal-Mart the cheapest for $6.99-$7.99, location-dependent. My Maxi-Mag Super TNT+ has a 60 grain count... and I can quite honestly say the plates almost vapourize. :D

Difference between the 17HMR ad 17M2 is power. The M2 is a necked down 22LR, and hard to find. I've only seen them once for sale in Ontario. The HMR is a magnum, easy to find, but expensive(for a rimfire). I've only shot an M2 once, and wasn't impressed with it. The HMR is a fun little round, and great for tearing up gophers.

For plinking, the 22LR. It won't burn your wallet as much as the magnums will. But, if you want to go to the range with a magnum, pick the one you like best. Surely someone there will let you try out their magnum rimfires. As for woodchucks, the 17HMR. That little red poof is mildly entertaining.

You already have a semi auto, try a bolt action. Again, what calibre do you want? How much you willing to spend?

When hunting for meat, I try to get head shots as much as possible, and fortunately have improved my skills over the years. What I use is Federal bulk or Winchester Dynapoints. When I go to the range for general plinking, this is what I bring. Cheap, and available. I know how they shoot out of my guns, and I know what to expect from them. I also hunt primarily with the 22LR or 22WMR. 17HMR is more for varmint carnage.
