Ross (full military) values?

I'm hoping, over time, to acquire examples of as many "Canadian" milsurps as possible, and am curious about values for Ross rifles - still in full military configuration. My knowledge of Ross rifles is limited to knowing there are a number of Marks, so would be interested in getting price ranges (knowing condition makes a huge difference) for the different Marks here in Canada.

And for those fortunate enough to own a full military Ross...do you shoot them, or do you view them as too fragile/valuable/dangerous?

Depends if you want one that is completely original, that has very strong stock cartouches, and no repairs, or if you want one of the restored rosses that has had the stock re-lengthened.

The second ones are more common but still in the $800-$1000 range depending on condition etc.

They all tend to shoot very well, and as long as you don't intentionally bugger up the bolt assy or try to play commando in the mud they'll last for a long time.
 
You either have to start North of $1000 or find someone REALLY Gullible. I have 3 MkIII's that I joined forend extensions to the forends that had been shortened. Unlike H Wally, I have been unable to interest anyone in them at a reasonable price. Both of the two I want to sell have most of the stock stamping gone. The one I am keeping has good stamping. I also have an early MkII. You should either buy "The Ross Rifle Story", which has been reprinted or "Sir Charles Ross and his Rifle", which is much cheaper but also much less detailed. If you wanted to own every variant, you could fill a lot of gun safes and spend the price of a few new vehicles.
 
I also would like to buy a Ross, perhaps when my investment comes to fruition I will have the 1000 or so to buy one that is nice. After all, who knows how much they will be worth when I am 70?
 
Haha - I think it's more a question of how much are the nose caps worth. Sporters have stayed the same price for quite a while, but the nose caps are worth at least $40 now :p
 
Mk. II vs. Mk III

The prices being quoted in this thread...are they for Mk III rifles in original trim, or do either Mk II or Mk III rifles go for about the same?

A good original military Ross in good shape, either Mk II or Mk III...north of $1200, maybe up to $1600.
A Mk II 3 Star (the most common) can be a bit less but depends.

Based on how few are left in full wood, how unavailable parts are, and how few people are willing to sell, I'd say a fair bit.

Just FYI, I've got cash in hand for MKIII milled nose caps if anyone has one that they're willing to part with (you know you're never going to actually refurb a ross, sell that nose cap to me ;) )
 
Speaking only for the south side of the razor-wire......clean unmolested MkII's are selling close to $2000 or more for the early versions. MkII***'s, 4*'s &5*'s are bringing $1200-$1500.
The guys shooting Military Bolt-Action Matches have recently discovered MkIII's, and more than a few have easily topped $2,000. About time, too-
