Ross Long Range Target Rifle Project - Pic Heavy

Oh man. That's going to be Sophia-Loren-In-Her-70's levels of Classy Old Lady when you're done.

Lovely work, carefully done by people who know what they're doing. Such a great job, mate. Well done.

Speaking of Mr. Kob knowing his biscuits, he sent me this picture this morning. When chatting, he mentioned he has done quite a few Ross rifles in the past, and noted that the larger chunk of steel that is the action makes quite the splash when it hits the water. This creates the incredible colours and vibrancy seen here.

Holy shades of colors Batman. Kob's work be right up there with Turnbull I reckon. Beauty!

Very cool. I have 2 M-10, one original 280 with a decent enough bore, and one in 7mm RM.

I think I will be reaming it out to 7mm STW because oddly enough I have 7mm STW dies and brass and no 7 RM stuff. It's got a steel tube scope on it and a heavier profile barrel, in a custom stock.

I've got two Mk3 complete actions as well sitting around. Would love to make them into custom rifles some day. I just love the Mk3 action, it's smooth as butter and built like a tank.

And I'm the only guy here thinking to himself, "Boy, I'd love to see some pictures of those two rifles!".....

Looking forward to seeing this project done!
Love the CCH!

Interesting post. I approve wholeheartedly.
Case hardening is one thing I keep bugging my son to try. He's got a gun or two and is fond of working on them.
Got an 1871 mauser carbine action with a 12 gauge bbl, already broken apart, unscrewed would be a better term.
It'd look nice like this.
Thanks for the cool post BTW

BTW...is this CCH cosmetic only, or is actual hardening? Have been curious about that.

It is true bone and charcoal hardening. BTW, the picture you responded to in your post above is someone else's project Ross that Oskar sent me as an example of his work. I decided against a full colour case receiver for this project. A little too busy for my eyes.

Reloading 6.5-303 British

My Ross MKIII was so worn, the bullets where coming out sideways. So I got very similar mod to mine made at the same place. Same action, same barrel same caliber. Not built for pretty. Kept the factory stock.
I didn't see a whole lot of info on actually shooting it and couldn't find much info online with 6.5-303 Brit reloading. So here's my experience so far.
I use the factory sights.
I got a RCBS 6.5x55 die set. I resized the 303 brit casings just deep enough to just touch the shoulder then I annealed them. They fit in the chamber so that's good enough for me to fire-form them.
I didn't work on a specific load. I just wanted something safe to shoot and fire-form my casings. I used 35gr of IMR-4895, Bullets are Nosler P/N 26725 140gr, sitting at 3.100 COAL so they fit in the Mag. The powder load was weighed only once. It was just a rough load plus or minus 1/2 grain either way to save time.
I used a 303 Brit shell holder with the 6.5x55 bullet seater die.
I fired a few sighting shots at 50m to get in the ball park. then backed up to a 100 meters.
This gun is definitely a long range riffle. With a proper load, I can see myself easily do sub MOA with factory sights no problem. (I sighted with the peep sight for accuracy)

After being shot, I annealed and I sized the casings using the 6.5x55 die. I brought the shoulder .003" back. I trimmed the casings to the 303 British specs. (max 2.222), tumbled them and now they wait until I have a bit more time.
Now that I have enough casings that are fire formed to the chamber. My plan is to work up a load using H-4350 powder, Im thinking a starting poing of 39gr and work up from there until I'm happy. Same bullets and seating.

Hi everyone, the rifle has come along well, but is on hold temporarily. I have moved to a space with no area to build, and work life has increased greatly since I started the project. I will still be doing odds and ends when I can, I'll keep you all posted. :)
