so I was just looking at what would be useful as a parent cartridge for making brass into 280 Ross and it suddenly struck me...

28 Nosler, same OAL as 280 Ross, all the other dimensions look good from what I can see, rim might need to be looked at .556" Ross vs .534" Nosler, may need to look at the extractor.

the only issue is that the 280 is really .287" bore and the 28 Nosler is .284" but if I'm handloading anyways the .287" bullets are still going to be a problem.

So what is the down side, I think the Ross will handle 28 Nosler pressure, and the chamber should clean up fine. I'll have brass that is relatively available without a lot of case forming.

tell me why I should not look into this seriously.

Woodleigh makes .287 bullets I believe Tradex has/had them.A lot used the .375 Ruger which you may already be aware of.

I make mine from .300 H&H or .375 Ruger. Both work well and aren't that tough to manage.
You don't necessarily need .287 bullets. Mine prefers .284 " bullets and yes I've tried both.
It would be a shame in my opinion to see a rare sporter messed with.
But it's your gun at the end of the day.
