Hey all! I knowticed the other thread with a range report so I thought I'd do my own. I took the Ross out today to sight her in and see if the Ross was a good shooter. When I bought it last week the front sight was moved about an 1/8" to the left so I moved it back over to the middle to see what would happen. The gun is shooting to the left so I think I may have gone too far, still adjustment on the rear sight but I only had so much time to play with it today. A little more adjusting and it should be close to perfect. I was shooting from a standing position with a rest, I'm sure I could get the groups tighter from a seated position but I'm super happy with how good the old Ross shoots at this point.

This was shot at what I thought was 50 yards but after measuring it's more like 75 yards. All were shot standing with a rest with 180gr PPU ammo. I've only test fired 3 rounds through this gun previously to today and am still figuring out the gun!

Anyhow, here's some pics of groups 1,2,3,4 Still never got the sights to the right enough but I'm sure in one more day of playing I'll get her beat!

I love this Ross!! Can't wait to feed her some cast reloads! The bolt and trigger are so smooth, I may be ruined for ever, the Enfield just will never feel the same.

Oh and by the way for the nay sayers, the gun still hasn't blown up!!!;)

Great shooting, especially for the first time with a rifle!

BTW, you can adjust the Ross left-and-right with the little thumb-screw BEHIND the little aperture slide in the back sight. You will note that the slide itself is graduated, as is the sight base. Both are in MOA (roughly).

Try putting your sight out 2 MOA RIGHT and then aim with the UPPER RIGHT CORNER of the front sight at the LOWER LEFT CORNER of a 6-inch BLACK aiming square.

The results just might shock you.

Good to see that you are having fun.

That's what they are for!

Now friend you are a member of the very select Ross shooter's club who still have their face intact, haha! The Ross is a joy to shoot:)

Yep this thing is sweet for sure! I hope I didn't let the cat out of the bag! These guns are way more capable then they ought to be!

Smellie, I was adjusting the rear sight but I didnt get enough shooting time to get it moved over enough. But yeah what you were saying about holding over to the right makes sense for sure. It took awhile to figure these sights out, but once I did wow! Oh well there's always next weekend! I still think I may have moved the front blade too far past center on the barrel. I checked with a micrometer and it's still over a bit. Way better then before, when I test fired it to check function it was shooting 9" right so the fact that it's now left 4" means I may have over corected it. Oh well, next weekend I'll fix it, my wife got a scope for her 795 marlin and I promised I'd help he sight it in today so the Ross had to be put away!

Patiently awaiting my bullet mould, will be great to see what cast rounds will do to accuracy.

Oh, Oh! Another ROSS Monster has been created. SMELLIE has just given you one of the Methods we used for targets out to 1000 yards, in that the "Bullseyes" are hard to line up compared with a corner of the target. Some very respectable shooting was done with this sight picture with iron sights that todays shooters find hard to believe, especially without using a telescopic sight.

Do not expect the same accuracy with cast bullets, (at first without some experimentation.) Once you find the right load combination for your rifle, Cast Bullets can be just as accurate as Mark VII ball out to 300 yards. (Why, oh why, did Hercules ever discontinue Hi-Vel 2 powder?) When shooting groups, I find it is sometimes better to shoot four shot groups. This works out to five different loadings in each box of 20, and does give a better indication of how a load will perform. With a 3 shot group, you can have two together and one flyer, but with a four shot group, if you have three together and one flyer, you can suspect the shooter and not the rifle or load combination.

Since you have now actually FIRED A ROSS, it would appear that all those doom and gloom people who gave you their advice on your rifle blowing up on you just might be wrong. One accessory you now need is to go to one of those "T" shirt places in Brandon and get yourself a "T" shirt with an Atomic mushroom explosion on it, and the words, "I FIRED A ROSS RIFLE - AND LIVED" on it. This is a great thing to wear at Gun Shows and on the Range, and people either think you are "Superman" or a complete idiot for actually touching a round off. "Dont you know those things are dangerous and blow up on you?" ;)

Perhaps we are going to have to have a "ROSS" rifle shoot this summer?

I already contacted Smellie and for sure my wife and I will make the 3 hour drive to come and shoot with you guys this summer! I would love to be able to stretch the range out and see if i could actually hit something at long range. I know the rifle will do it but it's me I'm not so sure about! I'm very excited to start hand loading and the fun will be perfecting the load for my rifle. I know the load is 13 grains of red dot to start, but what is the acceptable plus/minus ratio to work with? I know it won't be much so I'm guess very small increments will be the only safe way. I'm thinking I may need another reloading book just for cast bullets, I want to be safe while experimenting. I have to google "the load" and see what I can find, I know the info has to be out there.
As for the T shirt, that's the greatest idea I've ever heard! My wife and brother still haven't shot the Ross yet, they're still unsure and they think imma little crazy!!

I want the T-Shirt if we can get a picture and a slightly modified version of Smellie's Sig Line.
How about
