Ross Mk.III sight base removal question.

I don't know if there is a correct direction. I think I've tapped them out left to right. But it is worth making a very small, discrete witness mark on the sight base and the barrel so that when you put the darn thing back on it is properly indexed.
 
To remove the sight base you have to remove the sight blade. There is a pin that runs down into the barrel through the sight base. Drill a small hole into the pin, tap it and run in a screw. Then, pull out the pin....if it does not come out, you have to drill it out, but be carefull as you don't want a hole into the barrel. OR you can just BUBBA it off with a drift punch and shear the pin.....seen lots done that way also....
 
I have seen Mk.II sight bases with a vertical screw underneath the front sight which is exposed when the front sight clamp screw is removed. It engages a shallow blind hole in the upper surface of the barrel. Have not seen a vertical pin underneath the front sight on a Mk.III, only the lateral crosspin, which engages a notch across the upper surface of the barrel. Just checked a Mk.III barrel which is missing its front sight base - received it that way - there is no evidence of a vertical blind pin, only the notch for the crosspin.
