I picked up this Sportered Ross this weekend at an auction. Now I need to strech the wood :)

Double edged sword - Bubba was too lazy to sand the wood..... but bubba was too lazy to clean the bore. It is rusted up bad.

Has all the wood behind the read band in original condition, so it should be an easy restore project.

Curious with the stock markings and wouldn't mind some input:

I take it that it was originally issued to 2CGA with rack number 48 in March of 1912, then re-issued to the 42nd Battalion CEF with rack number 873 in March of 1915. Am I correct in that? Reciever is marked LC, so it most likely made the journey to Europe.

I have researched that 42nd Battalion CEF was 42nd Lanark and Renfrew Regiment. Is that right? Who was 2CGA? 2nd Dragoons or 2nd Regiment, Queen's Own Rifles of Canada? Other?

Any help would be appreciated.

To the best of my knowledge, Mk. II rifles were not used in Flanders. The CEF and LC marks indicate overses service, so I would assume it would be related to use in England.
Could CGA refer to an artillery unit?
Nice stock markings, too bad it was cut. An excellent restoration candidate. That's likely Italian walnut in the stock, get the right piece of wood before restoring. Mk. II nosecaps are much easier to obtain than Mk. III ones.
Bore might be a candidate for electonic cleaning.

The 42nd Battalion, CEF was part of the 7th Infantry Brigade of the Canadian 3rd Division starting in February 1915. They were later perpetuated by the Black Watch.

They arrived in France in September of 1915, and were not present at the Second Battle of Ypres.

Also, the Ross was used in Flanders up until 1916 at which time it was ordered to be replaced by the SMLE. As for if that included MKII's, I'm not sure.

Luckily there are no US markings at all. Its Canadian through and through.

I have all the parts I need so far, I just have to find some wood. Italian Walnut you say..... hmmm. That may explain alot. I've had a hard time nailing down the exact type of wood. I will look into that.
