Just a question for you ross people out there;

how easy is it to switch receivers between barrels?

I have a untouched barrel wth a bent reveicer and i have a shortened barrel with a great receiver. I am guessing I should have a gunsmith do this but I figured I would ask the wise milsurp people.

Mk. II or Mk. III? Swapping barrels on Mk. II (1905) rifles is really, really easy. Mk. III (1910) rifles are a different story, and receiver wrench and barrel vice will be needed. Mk. III barrels can be in tight. There should be no indexing problem, though.

Mark 2 it is. alright. well seeing as i don't have a barrel vice and a receiver wrench and I may need to find one.

Mark 2?????

There's a set-screw holding things together. Remove that and sometimes you can even turn the barrel out by hand. At least, I have one that's that easy (of course, also have a couple that aren't). But it's not a big job. I just wouldn't want to try to cut that Mark 2 thread!!!!!

That's something you really don't want to forget. Can make all the difference sometimes:D

I agree with Tiriaq !!!!! The most difficult barrels I ever tried to swap were Ross Mk. III. Unbelievably tight !!!!!!! I had all the right tools, jigs and fixtures and it was still a tough job................

Cheers,

Try to be more specific.....Only IF you have a pair of originally short-barreled (28") MkII's- any* variation EXCEPT the MkII** with the 30 1/2" bbl- the offset grubscrew on the bottom of the receiver comes out first, then politely thump the receiver-barrel area with a chunk of wood or a hide mallet to loosen the corrosion, THEN the barrel should back right out clockwise! I've seen too many MkII's with pipe-wrench scars where fools tried to back them out CCW.....

I'll post some pictures after the weekend. so you guys don't have to venture into the woods. bother receivers are identicle including the inscription and number placement. however from what I have read Mr. Ross liked to make subtle changes.

That's interesting, the barrel is threaded left hand? Turn CCW to tighten?
