I got this Ross Rifle on Remembrance Day this year and haven't had time to shoot it. I loaded a bunch of ammo for it just never actually shot it. So I took it out today with my load of 150gr Hornady Interlock with 40grs of IMR3031 and this is how it shot.

100 meters.

I was told the Ross Rifle is well known for being a very accurate gun. I just didn't think it was that accurate! I wasn't even trying either. Took awhile to figure out how to use the sights. I could print at 50 meters easily and learned it shoots slightly to the left and about 4" high. When I went out to 100 I was either shooting over the target or under it because it took three attempts to get on paper. If the gun wasn't so damn long and heavy, Id be tempted to take it Still Hunting. I may even try it if I can find a place that isn't so badly grown in.

Nice shooting.

Many people have higher expectations for military surplus rifle accuracy than is realistic, or was ever intended with the designs. It's nice when one of these old rifles meets or beats ones accuracy expectations!

They must have been something really special when new. Have you ever read smellie's sig line? It may have changed but at one time it read "110 years and still nothing beats a Ross."

Clean the bore real good to remove any copper fouling and things will only get better.Over the years I'm sure there's build up.

I tried that once with my sub MOA mk3 Ross.

Accuracy fell apart for at least 100 rounds till I put a nice thin layer of fouling back in the barrel.

I may try some 3031 as I've never used that in a Ross.

OP, my load is on the light side but Smellie told me to try it so I did. . It's 36.5 to 37 grains of imr4895 and a 180 Sierra pro hunter. I seat the bullet about 10 thou off the lands. That load wakes up any Ross I've tried it in. My mk3 will stack em at 100 with load! I once was on the range with Smellie and he passed me his mk3 and we decided I should try my hand loads in his rifle. Same thing, at 300m it easily put them onto a tiny 8" gong.

BTW, nice shooting it's always great to see someone enjoying a Ross! They are my favorite.

MMM
Try and get yourself an E or R-10, an E or R '05, or better yet an M-10 (that is the .280) and you will be a happy man in the woods.
Keep up the good works.
