Ross rifle details

Hello Rschuld. This Ross is officially listed as - Ross Mark II with Mark III rearsight. If my memory is correct there were 44,700 made definately between 1907 and 1910 inclusive. Approx. 26,000 of this pattern were modified later on in 1910 to 1912 and the modification was listed as - Ross Mk II 3* (three star). Initially rifles with the Mk III rear sight had a V notch which mated with an inverted V (barleycorn) front sight. The modified rifle had a Sutherland (Nova Scotia) made Mk II rearsight with both an aperture and an u notch rear sight mated with a blade front sight. This rifle appears to be made 1908 with the serial number 160 (series) AC. I can't quite read the issue unit markings above but maybe if you send them I may assist. With such a limited number unmodified surviving it makes this model scarce. The book "the Ross Rifle Story" by Chadwick et al is expensive but can give you a more complete history. John T.

Thank you John! That is great information. I will definitely look into purchasing the book.

Hi guys
I'm new to collecting and have an opportunity to purchase the attached rifle. Does anyone know any more details on it? It appears to be Canadian broad arrow marked so would it be military issue? Does anyone know what the regiment could be? 74th?

Definitely military issue, as John mentioned it is known as the Ross Mk. II with Mk. III Rear Sight.

I have also seen them referred to as the Mk. II**** and also the Mk. II***. There appears to be some conjecture depending on the source.

John knows his stuff.

It appears to be a nice one, and scarce. Good luck! Post some more photos if you end up getting it, always nice to see a scarce Ross.
