Ross Rifle Stacking Tool

How cool is this ? The Ross rifle snout is placed in the spring loaded wooden cup and the butt is secured in a fitted nest . I personally hadn't seen one of these before.

Any idea whether this would have been for factory use or as part of a transit case of some sort?

Good find. Not a common item. Looks unused. I'm guessing that the rack system these were designed for had a shallow recess into which the butt of the rifle fitted. You put the muzzle in, pushed down, slid the butt into the recess and the spring kept the butt up into the recess, sort of locking the rifle in place.
