Hey I have a 1905 ross rifle that I'm trying to learn more about, the wood is pretty beat up and most of the bluing is wore of it has a large l stamped on the barrel, which has been shortened to about 21" it has dc proof and 1906 stamped on the barrel with a serial number, if any one knows more about these and could provider with a little more knowledge about it that would be great
Pm me and I'll send pics because I don't know how to post them

If it has a serial number down by the top of the wood on the left side it's a sporter or commercial rifle

It could even be a MkI, or maybe just an early MkII. My MkI* has its serial number stamped on the barrel in the same manner as on the stock on the rest. It obviously also has the stock markings. I kind of think a sporterized MkII* I had had the same date and block ID on the barrel too but I could be wrong. I'll double check my MkI tomorrow but I kind of think it's an I block 1906.

Does it have a weird little cut out or button on the right side of the stock above the trigger?

No, no cut out, it's early mark ii with a mark ii sight, that looks like the old Mauser sight sort of, if that's a good way of describing it.
The stock has no marking left on it and is falling apart, but everything else is in reasonably decent shape

Rempel I have an early MK II* with the serial number stamped on the barrel as you have described. I think they must have stopped doing this at some point during early MK II production.

The serial number on the barrel is 189 / 1906 E which is strange since the serial number on the stock is clearly 289 / 1906 E

I agree with Brandon that your large I stamping will be part of your serial number as in ### / 1906 I

It would be great to see some pics of this rifle. It's about 3 - 4000 rifles down the production line from mine.
