Hi guys...

I know this has been covered... but the search function didn't return anything...

Where are you guys sourcing your birch for a ross stock extension project?

Who are you having do the work?

My smith hasn't been able to find a wood match, so I'm hoping to help the process along.

Yellow birch was used originally in many later Mk. III rifles. You might be able to find suitable wood at a specialty lumber yard. Even then, wood you locate now might or might not be close to what was cut a century ago. Wood is quite variable.
Whatever is used, it is likely that some experimentation with staining is going to have to be done. At least the middle band divides the old from the new.
I prefer not to alter the colour of the original stock; I try to make the new wood match.
I would be inclined to use maple or whatever birch you can find - and adjust the colour to match. Use a piece with a grain pattern that harmonizes. Birch and maple are similar in appearance, quite pale, and when stained it should be possible to get an unobtrusive restoration.
 
The member on here reproducing Ross stocks has said in the past he's used buggered up buttstocks off of old milsurps as wood donors for forend extensions. Kind of a wood time machine....
 
When I was doing a lot more work on antiques, I tried to maintain an inventory of scrapped stocks for grafts. It can be hard to find modern wood that grain matches a stock that was made 150 years ago, using wood from a tree that was a couple of hundred years old at the time. Might be tricky to find a piece long enough, uncomplicated by pre-existing cuts, for a Ross restoration.
 
there are a couple of stores in Ottawa that sell birch hard wood . but there should also be something in your area. ask at the local hardware store . they will know local woodworkers and suppliers.
 
I have a template cut for forend extentions. I can either extend yours in place or make one for you. I also have a source for birch and other hardwoods, but I don't have any in hand, but (time permitting) I can make up what you're looking for.
