Hi all,
I'm slowly looking for a 22LR for next grouse season. My main criteria was that it be light and compact (and not too expensive). I originally leaned towards a autoloading rifle with the usual suspects (ruger, savage, etc). However, with a new member to be added to the family very shortly (and Daddy hoping he'll take up shooting eventually!), I wanted to go with a youth gun: Would be great for my kid and it would an awesome little compact rifle for me as well.
I went to a local store in Quebec City and a clerk showed me the Rossi Matched Pair 22LR/410. Wow! It looks amazing...it's single shot, but I could live with that. I rarely see 2 grouse hanging out together (only happened once so far). I really like the optic fiber sights on the one I saw.
I'm not too good when it comes to shotgun and such. Is a 410 any good? The grouse I see don't usually fly off when we see them, so I don't see much use for a 410...and I was thinking if I ever want to hunt some birds, I probably couldn't hunt anything with a 410, right? I went to check out their site and I saw that they also had a 22LR/20ga combo. However, I was wondering how much "kick" would a 20ga have in such a light rifle?
Also, what can you hunt (realistically) with a 20ga?
Is a 20ga just a bad 12ga?
Finally, any owners of matched pairs? Any regrets?
Cheers!
