Rossi R92 in 454 casull thoughts

I bought a Rossi 454, pre-safety crap unit yrs back that was a straight shooter with my hardcast loads using Winchester 454 brass. Fitted it with a Marbles Bullseye rear sight along with a Steve's ejector spring and stainless steel magazine follower. Never bothered with factory ammo in 'er as I didn't need it.

I tried loading some Campro 250FCP to 1.60". Cycled for the most part but the odd one stands straight up as it doesn't seem to be stopped by the guide at the right time or place. I am going to try my 300grn cast bullets. I should be able to load them long enough to work 100%. I have a lot of .454 so just using the "right" ammo is easy enough for now.

My Rossis have all been chambered in 45LC. I just read the internet about the 454 version - Everywhere I've ever seen info on the topic, people say the Rossi in 454 will also cycle 45LC (just like the 44Mag version cycles 44Spec, and 357 cycles 38). But then of course, some individual R92 rifles have problems with this. Heck, some individual R92 rifles have problems with cycling the ammunition they are primarily chambered for. It's no mystery though, cartridge length is a particular challenge for most lever gun designs. It is kind of interesting that Big Horn Armory goes out of their way to say that their version in 454 Casull is "unlikely" to cycle 45LC properly.

Since Prophet River has posted to this thread, maybe they can chime in with their opinion.

The poster who posted that he was putting a rail "in" the dovetail wrote a clarification above. I agree that mounting a red dot via the factory d/t holes is a great option.

Not trying to put words in BHA mouth, but IMO with regards to their 454 cycling 45 Colt being "unlikely", its easier to say that and if it does cycle, bonus. If it doesn't, you were not misled.

As to my Rossi 92 in 454, I have never tried 45 Colt, no reason to. If I want a lighter load I will just load up some proper 454 brass to the desired power level.

The only complaint I have regarding the Rossi 92 in 454 is that horrible recoil pad they come with.... UGLY. They should just come with the same stock every other carbine comes with!

I have owned a few 92s and a Big Horn Armoury all in 454. None of them reliably cycled 45lc there is just something about the case the always gets hung up. Ive never really investigated why, because I have a marlin in 45lc, but it has been my experience that it doesn't work. One may be able to figure it out but I think that if the factory hasn't figured it out it won't be an easy journey.

I did talk to Campro about loading their .452 fcp for the 454... they strongly suggested that it wasn't a good idea as the jacket would be peeled off in the barrel. Just not designed for the pressure or velocity of the 454. I love them for my 45lc and 45-70s.

I think you missed my point entirely. I wasn't using or suggesting them for .454. The bullet has a profile that works well in lever guns but loaded to a typical "long" .45C OAL didn't produce 100% reliability in my case. That's all I meant.

Ok I see, and I agree, they work very well for both 45lc and 45-70.
