Well I've owned this rifle a while now and I'm pleasantly surprised. I own and have owned several Marlins over the years and have a number of the new Ruger Marlins including the new 18-in sbl in both 45-70 and 44 Mag trapper but I really wanted to get the new Marlin Trapper in 45-70 which I've been waiting for some time. I've been quite disgusted by the ridiculous prices being asked for currently in the country so I decided to try out one of these Rossi's which is basically just an exact knockoff of the old original Marlin. It only cost $1,500 bucks brand new and I have to say I'm pretty happy with the purchase. I was a little nervous trying out a Brazilian gun since I had a pretty bad experience with buying a Italian made Chiappa 44 mag takedown. The little Chiappa was incredibly accurate but in less than a month start having all kinds of other issues and I doubt I'll ever buy another one. This Rossi could not be more opposite. The fit and finish is as good or better as any of the new Ruger Marlins. It Cycles smoother than most Marlins I've ever owned and is even just a little slightly better than the new Ruger made one I have. It has an unusual 1:12 rifling which is actually supposed to be better as opposed to the generic 1:20 typically used and so far I find it amazingly accurate with heavy or light loads. It has an AR-15 extractor which is an improvement on Marlin. Another noticeable little plus over even the new Ruger Marlins is that the loading gate came with zero burr or sharpness which even my new ruger built ones had a issue with. It also has a threaded barrel for a muzzle brake, that to me is handy as well and it does not detract from the vintage look. Despite the short barrel it's quite stable shooting and the pad is more than sufficient. The only thing I didn't like about it was the Buckhorn site which I've never liked. I originally shot it with it and there's no issues its quite accurate at least to 50. I have since remedied that with a Skinner picatinny rail and peep sight. It's pretty much an exact knockoff of the old Marlins and most original or aftermarket Marlin accessories fit it. Basically I'm so happy with this little carbine I'm not going to bother getting the new Ruger Marlin one

Marlin58, that's awesome, I've still got a few marlins but currently have two Rossi R95's incoming. I ordered the 3030 trapper in wood and the 20 inch 45-70 in wood as well, should be here early next week, these guns are being very well received and appear to be the best value in a lever action, cant wait to try mine

At this pricing now they are worth it compared to new Marlins at least.

Other than the big buckhorn rear sight and cheap looking spongy wood, the ones I've handled were smooth and well built/well fit with decent triggers too

I have an R95 Triple Black in 30-30 and I am quite impressed with it. Super smooth and loading is a breeze. Its also good to note that these New R series feature the ability to download the mag simpily by pressing in the loading gate, like on the new Ruger Marlins, this was quite tricky with the older Marlins.

I have an R95 trapper 16'5 in 45-70 and it's now one of my favorite rifle! Super smooth, accurate and reliable. I have taken a deer and bear with it. With Barnes 300 TSX, it's quite a hand canon. I was able to put the Midwest industry handguard + stock and the Primary Arms PLX compact 1-8x24. It's a perfect bush gun. Here is a picture of mine in the wild during my last hunting trip.

Thats such a cool setup

What do you guys think about this action/mechanism vs the Win 94, considering pre 64s are available cheaper?

Simpler? More reliable? Easier to have serviced et? Any advantages at all?

I don't really know anything about the Win 94 but the Rossi 95 is quite easy to disassemble and to upgrade. Some small fitting is sometimes necessary to fit all the pieces (not exactly the same as marlin) but I was able to do it easily on my own

Are these a Marlin clone then, with the ability to fit marlin parts?

Yes, they are marlin clone ( marlin 336 for Rossi 95) but I have found that there are some super small differences. As an example, for the Midwest handguard (I took the 1895 version), I had to file a small part for the fitting to be perfect. Also, for the trigger, I upgraded it with the Range point marlin trigger but I had to order a marlin Trigger & Sear Pin from Numrich (5$) because the Trigger and Sear pin from my R95 didn't fit in the Range point trigger.

As a summary, for my built I got
1) Midwest industries Marlin 1895 extended M-LOK sight system 45-70
2) Midwest industries Lever Stock marlin pistol grip
3) Range Point Marlin trigger + Marlin Trigger and Sear Pin (from Numrich)
4) Range Point Precision comet muzzle brake 5/8 x24
5) Midwest Industries universal shell M-LOK

Voilà!

The pre 64 were not really available in trapper length, these trapper (16.5" barrel) Rossi's are pretty fast handling nice powerful bush guns
