I just watched a show yesterday on Discovery Channel called "Eaten Alive".

The show was all real life accounts of bear attack victims.

Trust me, you want the 44 mag.

i would get 38/357 because it is cheaper to feed

I thought a lot of people would feel that way.

Tho i was just at reliable sports and i note they've got some bulk 44 mag bullets, something like 500 for next to nothing - so for us reloaders there's ways to cheapen things up a little :)

the only tough thing would be finding brass for it

44 mag? Not that hard to find brass, but if all else fails buy a box of cheap american eagle ammo for 40 bucks and have fun with that and save the brass for reloading. :)

Wholesale has it for 36 bucks per 100 for new brass. They have winchester bulk and remington.

i just saw on the ammo source Wolf reloads for cheap
i guess that would make good reloading brass!

Yeah, i saw that too. :) At basically 50 cents a round it's hard to beat. Then stock up on discount bullets and you can reload for something like 25 cents a round till that brass wears out.

I get at least 6-7 loadings running them at max loads in a revolver. Could probably get more with good Hornady brass and backing off max a little. I suspect 10 or more before signs of wear start to show then. My current brass is not top of the line, and with max loads I'm seeing cases begin to split. Other guys who shoot more .44 than me probably have more info :). I run Alliant 2400 powder. Memory fails me but I seem to remember between 19-21 grains. Its been a few years since I've played with .44 All the newer manuals are lighter max's than the old ones thats for sure.

edit... oh ya, that's with 240grain JHP's

44 mag for me, just because I already have all that for reloading equipment.... and because it has greater abilities, and can always be loaded down if I don't want to be abused :p

Very interested whats the price? I would take one in .357, but can not commit to a preorder with a price.

Ignore the top I figured it, read the thread under this one.

OMG... I got one in 20 inches (454 Casull)and it kick... The ranch hand would be a real full house in such a short rifle... I guess 44mag will already be a hand full... JP

i know recoil is subjective ,

so this is my take on this .

i have a rossi with a 20 inch barrel too , and with the 454 casul factory hornady 300 grain rounds , i find them to be fairly mild when compared to lets say a browing blr in 30-06 or a husky in 270 .

it is more comparable to my 6.5x55 shooting 120 grain bullets .

shooting 45 colt through my rossi is like shooting a really big .22 , and just as fun :D

with all that said i really really want a ranch hand in 460 smith & wesson .

Lets go all the way , i own a NEF in 500s&w and i dislike shooting it the recoil is incredebile... so a Ranch hand in 500 s&w would not stay in the hand... JP

I have to admit - the recoil in the 44 mag 16 inch barrel is significant when you're using 240 grain bullets. Managable and not horrible by any stretch but it's a goodly hit. I think the ranch hand is already going to be a fair handful in 44 mag (tho useable). I don't know how much more recoil you could add before it became unplesant to shoot.

Depends, really. I have 2 45 colt firearms, a Mdl94 Trapper with a 16" barrel and a Ruger Bisley. I load both of these with loads that surpass the 44 Magnum. They are really comfortable to shoot in the RIfle, but the handgun obviously has more felt recoil, although still tolerable and controllable, for sure.

Who knows what the 44 Mag or hot loaded 45 colt will feel like in a Mares Leg? Might be uncomfortable because of the chopped down stock being used as a pistol grip, or it could be just fine, as it has a little weight to it and needs to be shot with both hands.:)

I do agree that a 454 in this configuration might be a handful, simply because of the stock design.:)
