Rossi Ranch Hand stripped screw

I have been having some issues with my .44mag Rossi Ranch Hand, I traced it back to a screw that has stripped. Rossi has been far from helpful. They added me to an indefinite wait list for a new guide and screw but won't ship to Canada...

It is the left side cartridge guide screw and cartride guide which also controls the rounds in the magazine.

Both the screw and guide are stripped.

I took the gun to a local gunsmith. He confirmed that they are indeed stripped. He tried to find a screw that he could make work, but the cartridge guide has stripped out too much. He recommended filling the hole with tig weld and starting from scratch or using JB Weld...

Has anyone used JB Weld to fix a gun? Would I put a little in the hole thread the screw in let it dry then back the screw out and reassemble the gun? Won't the screw be stuck? Lube the screw?

What do you guys recommend?

there is a titanium based epoxy putty that should work alot better than jbweld .

bearhunter would be the guy i'd talk to about this , we had exchanged a couple emails about gluing in a chamber insert using the stuff .

i am under the impression that rossi made a fairly close copy of the 1892 , so my first stop would be to see if i could get " generic " 1892 winchester parts to work .

i would also fire off a email to wanstalls with a picture of the exact parts needed to see if they can help you out .

there are also a few gunsmiths in the states that specialise in the rossi 1892 , again a email to them might get you the parts you need .


if you are going to use a jbweld like substance , clean the parts with laquer thinner , fill the hole with it , then drill and tap the hole .
 
Google VTI gun parts and order Chiappa replacement parts for their version of the 1892. The bits are readily available and should be a drop-in fit.

do not use laquer thinner it leaves a residue i recomend xylene or acetone to clean the surface prior to applying the expoxy

welding and retapping is obviously the way to go just need to find someone that wont overheat your parts
 
I have messaged Wanstalls, emailed Steve's Gun Parts, VTI, and M&M. I will see what they say.

This is a pretty major failure in a gun that is only 1.5 years old. Makes me wonder what kinda longevity I will get out of the rest of the rifle.

It was probably stripped from the factory....I have a rossi that came new from Wanstalls with a broken screw for the barrel band foreend retainer....it's still working fine just a hair loose so I haven't been to worried about it but I was a bit disappointed that wanstalls couldn't source a 5 cent screw for a brand new gun!
I don't know where the problem is but how hard can it be to ship small parts for repairs! if they can't help you find some parts maybe they will offer to trade you for a new gun and then at least they could keep yours for parts! That would be a first in Canada! A store that sells rossi's that actually has small parts available for the clients! If I was running a shop that sold a lot of Rossi's in Canada I would keep a few rifles in the back just for this purpose and I would gripe constantly at whoever is further up the line dealing with these guns to bring in some parts kits!
 
Can-Down I agree with you 100%.

I've had 2 screws strip their heads, barrel/hand guard band screw sheared in two. I was able to get those from Rossi, shipped to the US then up to me.

The cartridge guide is back ordered with no estimated time that they'll get more. I've been on a 4-6 month waiting list from Rossi. Lots of issues with my rifle... Getting tired of finding more problems.

Doubt it'll get replaced under warranty. I'll keep fixing it. Just hope it doesn't become a money pit.
 
VTI gun parts doesn't have parts for Rossi and didn't mention any parts that "should" fit it.

That is one option down. lol.

On the plus side I can now tear down my gun with my eyes closed and I have slicked up the action real nice. Still useless without these parts but at least its slick running now.
 
Snapshot out in Quebec is the warranty provider for Rossi.
If you need parts they might be able to help..... be patient.

I'd like to order a kit with every screw, an extractor and firing pin.
Ya....right.
