Rossi Ranch hand

I was recently looking at the take down version...pritty cool. I would go with 357/.38 myself.
cheers, Steve

.44 mag as kodiak suggested. If you don't, you'll always wonder what you're missing.

All kidding aside...
The rossi's for the most part are reliable but some have some rough actions that benefit from some polishing. I've got a rossi in .44 mag and love it but have spent a few hours polishing the trigger and the locking bars. It is a sweet rifle. Mine is completely reliable and would not hesitate to recommend it. Calibre choice is really up to you. No difference in reliability. If you reload, 45lc is the way to go. You can load light or you can load to 44 mag levels if desired. If you don't 38spc/357 gives you the flexibility.

What do you want it for? fun Plinking?,Hunting?,Predator Defense? Or some sort of combination?

What your intended use will be is important information and will help to pick the best caliber.

Mine has been away on warranty for about 6 months after I got a faulty gun. Ejection problem, bolt face with mechanical damage and a pitted barrel right out of the box!
Not impressed.
It did shoot though

Unfortunately the warranty support is slow in Canada and varies in quality.
The best bet with a Rossi is to inspect it if possible ormake sure that the seller is ok with an inspection period?

Your cougars(Or bears for that matter.....) wearing armor out east?

Nope, same old hair and hide as yours...just that for defense I want a tool that works every time.... all the time...not part of the time. I own 3 or 4 92's and for plinking/target/sillywet their great fun but for a dedicated defense tool... not a chance. Ejected live rounds ( their a lot of good to you on the ground) or stovepipes (they actually help a little by blocking your vision so you won't see what's coming at you) leave you with a real expensive club that a $10 piece of dowelling will do just as good.

I just bought one in 45 Colt and so far I love it. I am going to use it as my "dog walker". I've put only 50 rnds through it so far but 0 failures of any kind. I got it with an unfinished carbine stock and forend which I have installed, I like it a lot better that way. I also installed a Skinner barrel mounted peep. I may put a fiber optic front on it. I removed the saddle ring so I could clip my single point sling to the ring mount. It hangs perfectly under my arm when loaded, a slight angle when unloaded. For some reason mine came with a small lever loop which I am really happy about as the large loop was the one thing I didn't like about them. I'm waiting for a couple of different pieces I ordered to install a small picatinny rail to it so I can mount a flashlight.
I have Lee 250 gr. mold coming and have some Ramshot Silhouette powder to use which I hope will give me around 1400-1500fps with the 250's. The manual lists the max load 255gr @ 1322fps from a 7" barrel with that powder.
All in all I'm very happy with my new toy.

That's a handy rig for sure.
Unless your built like a giraffe, you could shorten the stock an inch or two and still have it comfortable to shoot. It might improve the Ballance and would look more "balanced" with the 12.5" barrel.
I've grown used to the big one but if I could reshape it I'd go with Henry's take on a mid size lever.
I like to let my hand ride on the outside of the lever for a more relaxed wrist angle and psudeo "pistol grip"

Let us know how your load development goes.

I did take about an inch off and it balances quite well now and should be perfect with the flashlight mounted. I have seen a couple of mid sized levers that I like and I may buy one of them or try reshaping this one myself in the future.
I have small hands so even this one is a stretch for my hand to get around so all I would be getting a mid sized for is gloves in the winter.
I will post the load development in a different thread when I get to it. I just scored some nickel brass today so now all I need is for the mold to show up.

Is that houses you're aiming at? I know they're miles away but... Gets my spidy sense tingling.

I have owned the 44 and the 357. I sold the 44 because the 357 was easier to shoot with less recoil. Off the bench milk jugs at 100m was fun game. Mine is used as a carry rifle while atving and camping. If I am helping another hunter it is my carry rig for that as well. Really enjoy mine. I will take it apart and slick it up one day as they are a little "notchy". Nice trigger though.
