Started a new project just before the prohibition on my CZ858 and have finally got back to having enough time to start on it again.

I have made a black walnut wood stock extension that is held on by a rare earth magnet. the screws heads on the butt plate prevent the stock extension from rotating. Note, I had to change the screws on mine since one was stripped from factory.

The stock was simple to make, mitre saw to cut the angles, plane and sanding block to shape it. Installing the magnet was a little more challenging with a spade bit, dremel tool, and two part epoxy. Finally, a protective plastic sheet to prevent the magnet from scraping the existing butt plate.







So far I have shot my original extension about 50 times with no issues. Although I would not recommend shooting off a solid mount as the way to remove the stock is to push it off on a angle. The magnet will take a fair amount of force to pull straight off.
 
That's a kinda funky solution....interesting. A good project for folks that love to tinker...but for us shmoes
that have time constraints, a call to Boyd's will fill the bill.:)

I like it...I have no interest in putting a full length stock on mine, it kind of defeats the purpose of why I bought it but there is the odd occasion where one would be nice...yes, more details please.
 
I came to the same conclusion. I purchased this rifle in 44mag as my backpack gun for when my dad and I go out gold panning. In this capacity it is good due to the size. If a person has the time to add the extension, due to a curious critter in the woods or just to use it for hunting, the added control and stabilization from the extension is excellent. The fact that no modification is required to the firearm itself is the best part of this addition. It simply sticks to the existing butt plate and the existing screws in the butt plate stop it from twisting.

At the start of this project I had made 6 of these thinking I would need to try a couple different attachments. The magnet was my first try and it has worked so well that I gave up on the other options. Currently, I have one that is finished completely, one that is ready for the magnet install but is not stained, and 4 others that are cut to the proper angles but not shaped. Was just trying to decide if I should finish the rest and throw them on EE in a week or two.

I will post the magnet used and a couple more pictures of how it attaches later tonight.
 
The magnet is from Princess Auto. Called a "Magnet Base with Ring" and has rare earth magnet base written on the back of the package. This the largest one that I could find that would still fit in the stock.

I still have it for my gold panning trips. We only do this once or twice a year, where I need a firearm along, and if all works well there are no rounds fired (so far zero fired).

I found that shooting with the removable configuration becomes painful after 20 rounds of full power 44mag. Also, if you do not keep it up to your shoulder you run the risk of knocking the extension off by moving it around (as long as you keep it shouldered, no worries). I made a full stock with a rubber recoil pad from my left over wood for normal everyday use.

Therefore, the extension serves a purpose for the specific need of a compact unit that can be changed into usable full stock.

that answers my questions ,so regular stock for playing and the 2 piece for use when space is a premium .Thank you for your experience

I think if ever decide to make another extension it would be a version that would lock into place. Maybe with tabs that would lock onto the original metal plate by doing a quarter turn.

But, this one works for now.
 
I was debating on making an extension ,or just a regular stock .For my purposes a regular stock will be the way to go ,being solid and stable
 
Never thought of magnets. That would be great for quick attach. I made mine by making butt plates and wielding nuts on the underside and using threaded rod that is solid on extension

Yes. A grade 8 bolt a file and time. Basically a caging bolt shape, the tabs are smaller than the bolt diameter and hole to match on the but plate. Small recesses on the back of the but plate fo the tabs to lock into.

I'm going to look into the cost of these dovetail connectors..... if they are reasonable and anyone's interested I may order some?
