Rough estimate on barrel cut down?

Hey,

I have a marlin 1895xtr in .450 marlin.

The barrel is stainless and 24" long. Wondering how much roughly it would cost to have a guy chop it down to 18.5 and reset my front sights?

I'm located just outside Toronto.

Cut and crown will be less than $100.
Resetting the front sight shouldn't be much more.

Maybe $50 to reset the sight.
Cost of the crown is going to depend on how it is done. Figure at least $100 if properly done on a lathe.

That's not bad at all. What about having it ported?

I'm just figuring out what I want to do with this cannon. I took a nice spill dogging two years ago and scuffed the barrel pretty good and it bothers me lol so I'm thinking I can have it shortened into a better dogging gun, make it lighter and fix the scuff all at once

No one in Canada is custom porting... a lot of work and expense to send it to the US.

Why port it? It's not like you are going to shoot it...

It requires very expensive equipment. Equipment not worth owning in Canada if it is for guns only.

What do you mean when you say you had a barrel turned down? To me that is turning the barrel contour lighter and takes hours to do...

They must be hard up for work! A few hours of shop labour for $20. Something doesn't sound right.

I would bet they are not licensed to work on firearms either... so did you remove the barrel from the action before having the work done?

Not to many shops would work within that pricing. Tying up a lathe for 20 minutes, and then a milling machine for 15 minutes at the low end.

One thing to consider also is whether you disassemble and reassemble the gun yourself,,or have the gunsmith do it. This can add a fair amount to the cost.

I think I'd let him take the barrel off . I have zero experience with head spacing etc.

You guys have a source for an east end gunsmith?

I was thinking about trying the guy in Bewdley, ON

Removing and replacing a barrel doesn't change headspace.
Not having a lever action receiver in place makes setting the barrel up in a lathe much easier.
If the barrel is to be removed, the price will go up. Removing a barrel is not entirely without risk.

The used to be a barrel porting service called MagnaPort. Electron Discharge Machining was used to cut the ports in the barrel. EDM would cut through the rifling without leaving a burr.
