Rough p38 - wanting to know value.

I just came into possesion of a p38. Its AC45, matching serial numbers 4103. Im sure the person who was issued this in 45 kept it till I got it today. Its in rough shape though. Theres no rust and has been taken car of but has quite a bit of pitting on the frame and inside/outside the barrel. Also there is still original cosmo grease in it. Im looking to sell it and wondering what the value is. Ill be attempting to fire it later this week, mechanically it looks and feels great. Let me know what you think its worth.... Id keep it but really am not interested in a P38

It's hard to give you any advice without a chance to have a look at the P38. So please make sure you post pictures soon.

BUT:
Please be very careful firing this gun (weakened/faulty recoil springs???)! Best advice I can give you now: Go and see a qualified gunsmith BEFORE firing the gun...

Looks like it was left in the rain for years and rusted then someone took a wire wheel or brush to it


I can't see it being any more than a few hundred and I can say comfortably that I personally would not shoot that gun.
 
Unless you're happy with > 200 keep it id shoot it with some mild handloads make sure you check the condition of the firing pin spring if its compromised could case the gun to come apart will shooting because it also retains the loaded chamber indicator.
 
Restricted gun cabinet decoration. Take whatever someone will offer.

That thing probably still functions though!

That P-38 looks a little rough......you may end up having a wall hanger there , I do not think that i would risk shooting it.......USE CAUTION !
 
that one looks VERY rough... I'd say you're lookin at a couple hundred bucks tops.

you can find a really nice one with no pitting, great barrel, etc for about 500-600 on the EE... refurbing that one probably isn't worth it... I would say leave it as-is and use it as a display piece.
 
I agree... refurbing would probably be the same cash outlay as buying a second hand one. Only reason I'd do it is I kinda enjoy the refurbishment process. If I could refurb the barrel I'd do it but its too far gone to do anything with.

There is too much damage for any kind of intervention to do any good. Sell it as a historical relic and move on.
