Rough use knives

That spring is going to be too hard to get it the shape you want, unless you have 2 years and 500 angle grinder discs. You will have to anneal it (soften it) first by heating to red hot (until a magnet wont stick, more precisely) and letting it cool slow, like in the coals overnight, then shape it, then heat to red hot(non magnetic again) and cooling it quick. Then you can temper it in your kitchen oven to soften it just enough that it's not brittle.

That's a rather simple rundown but the net is full of info, get researchin!:D

Yep, I've annealed some cast iron for someone who was busting lathe tools on hard/brittle bits. At the time I had a ceramics kiln which would be perfect. Idea was to get it to (IIRC) 700 degrees F, hold it there for 2 hours, and let it cool off in the (closed) kiln. Made it so I could turn down the thermostat...

Glad I've got "hot" handling gloves.

Thanks for the response - The way some folks are offering to buy multiple copies of the rough use knife it looks like Canada Ammo will have to have stock in the thousands so ordinary folk can buy one (or perhaps two) for themselves to use. Or - maybe I can befriend someone who's buying a dozen for gifts, and have one given to me...
yeah, right
