hey guys,

I'm taking my '41 Garand hunting with me in October, and I was wondering if I could get some definitive feedback on the number of rounds I can have have parked in the rifle. some people have quoted five (5), as regulations stipulate, while others have pointed to the Order of Canada's exemption allowing all eight (8) rounds to be within the rifle when hunting. anyway, I'd appreciate your feedback.

Rob

PS - Saya-nara, Bullwinkle!!

Workin Man is correct, in the garand you can put all 8. Other centerfire semi's are limited to 5 rounds... Retarted law, but the law non-the-less...

Cheers

if you need more then 2 you shouldn't ben hunting 8 rounds of 30-06 i might have to look at a garand thought 8 rounds would be nice for 3 gunning with a colt 45 and a mp44 remake bet i'd be the only one with that settup

any one know if this applies to all garands or just ww2 era

yikes 8 rounds of 30 06 what are you hunting veloceraptors or something

hey there AlderTK... it's the only rifle I have, so I'm gonna use it for the purpose it was made for :D

...besides, a 30 cal bullet at 2700+ fps would provide decent accuracy and impact damage at 500 yards (hopefully less - seen as though I'll be using my iron-sights!) which would translate into a "humane" kill.

and, the americans scored a large (disproportionate) number of "humane kills" with the Garand back in the 40's and 50's - so whom am I to question those statistics ;)

For those that are not familiar with the Garand action,, it is extremely inconvienient and perhaps even a little unsafe to go through the contortions of loading the enbloc clip holding less than the full 8 rds. So, you may not need 8, but that's what the rifle wants.

Ok, here comes the ethics police :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

And I guess he's giving advise without ever even loading a garand.

If you need more than two?????????

Where is captain deadly when you need him?
Where do #######s get off posting this kind of bull####?
I can tell you of three separate occasions moose hunting where the shooter required more than 8 rounds to shoot their moose, and signal to the group of what was shot... This is in the last 5 years...

Wow, some peoples children:rolleyes:

I'm puzzled - where does it say in the hunting regulations that other centerfire semis are limited to 5 rounds? I thought that the reference was to federal legislation, which while it restricts almost all centrefire semis to 5 rounds, and prevents restriced firearms from being used for hunting, still allows for exceptions, ie the Beretta Storm in non-restricted length can have 10 as can other non-restricteds like the XCR or robinson expeditionary etc which can use 10 round pistol mags.

the regulations I see reads as follows "You must plug a semi-automatic or repeating shotgun so that it will not hold more than a total of three shells in the chamber and magazine combined. Under the Criminal Code of Canada you cannot possess any clip/magazine that holds more than five shots for a semi-automatic centre fire rifle unless that clip/magazine has been specifically exempted pursuant to the Firearms Regulations."

The last part of the above exempts the Garand, but while I'm not a lawyer, it seems to me that it exempts the pistol mags as well.

It doesn't say anything in the provincial regs other than the 3 round rule for repeating shotguns. The Federal law makes a provincial reg unnecessary unless they wanted to restrict it to fewer than 5 rnds.

As for the "if you need more than 2.. "comment, I had a N04 Enfield that would not reliably feed the last 3 of my handloads from the mag. I used to load it with 8 just to make sure it would feed the first 3 or 4.

I used a M1 garand deer hunting a couple of falls. Very handy on a party hunt for antlerless deer on a drive. I am a decent shot but running deer are always a challenge. I am prepared to defend my position on shooting running deer also. In my part of the country you shoot running deer or you go hungry.
I don't hunt with it anymore because it was too heavy to carry all day.

cheers Darryl

this is a specific exemption issued by the Order of Canada - because the Garand "enclip" is specifically designed to hold eight (8) cartridges - no more, no less. other standard spring fed mags allow for any number of rounds to be added (depending on the legal limit or mag capacity). from what I was specifically told by a barrister who also collects Garands, the 8 round enclip for the Garand is the sole exception.
