I got my pal/rpal maybe 20 years ago or so. At one point my license wasn't renewed in time, so I had to do the regular pal over again.

When I contacted the rcmp, they said I am/was still in the system and can get my rpal the next time I send in for renewal (or anytime), and just check off the box for restricted. Apparently when I took my course the first time, there was no special handgun training course needed, so I am somehow grandfathered? in.

Anyways, I don't own and restricted firearms and not sure I will. But figure I should just get it on my next renewal just to have it.

If I decide to get it, does that mean anytime a law enforcement brings up my name etc. it will pop up that I have my restricted license? eg. traffic violation etc?

Sorry maybe a dumb question.

^^^ This and I think it works not with the license but with registration of a restricted firearm in case they have to go to your home or if you are involved in a police report (violence). In that case they usually show up and confiscate your restricted and leave it in the hands of the court to sort it out see if you can have them back. since no one (not even in Quebec ) knows if you have non restricted I don't think they apply.

Edit: I don't think it works with traffic violations cause I've had a few tickets after I had my RPAL and restricted firearms and the officer didn't seem to take extra care or even knew that I had a license

They do know but it takes some digging into cpic. I had a cop comment on my speeding tickets and owning guns and not making the brightest choices...

It's funny you bring this up. When I initially did my FAC testing back in 1997 I had to do the restricted part of the test as well. At the time I didn't have any need for restricted firearms so opted for the non restricted FAC. So basically I've completed the required "testing" for the restricted certificate but I've never held the license. I doubt this "grandfathers" me though. Does it?
