I'm pretty sure you CAN use your parents as references... since the only people that it actually prohibits are current conjugal partners. Can anyone confirm this?

I plan on using my mother and brother as my two references but we all live in the same house and have the same phone number. I feel kinda greasy using two family members that live in the same house as me for references but I don't really know anyone else that fits the criteria....I should be okay though right?

Using your mother or brother should be fine. If you're looking for someone else who fits the criteria though, why not ask your family doctor to be a reference?

Unlike PAL, CFC will phone both of your references and you for RPAL, they will ask you all the questions you already answered in your application. So make sure you go through the questions with your references or at least give them a heads up.

Technically, those who live with would be the best references. They would have the most access to you, make a better assessment, and the most likely to be in danger if you suddenly become a criminal after touching a handgun or "military assault type weapon" (it happens--just ask the Liberals).

What I don't understand is the extra scrutiny of the restricted vs non-restricted license. It would appear to me that the CFC thinks no one could ever be hurt with a non-restricted firearm.

But why am I even trying to understand this? The rules aren't logical to start with.

Interestingly enough, that was going to be my exact reasoning if there were problems with my application and I was asked to justify my choice of references. But since it's not going to be an issue I won't even worry about it.

I have no problems whatsoever with the process, I think all the steps involved make sense (for the most part)... but thats not to say I think it's a perfect system by any means and there are a LOT of improvements that should be made. Like having to send exam results to the CFO and then to Mirimichi, that seems to be total BS. Also the different requirements of the CFO's depending on provinces also don't make much sense either, luckily we only have to go through this process every 5 years.

^^ My references didn't recieve a call for my PAL.
Maybe it depends on the mood of the guy/gal at the CFC that day. heh

they don't call for PAL, but they will for your RPAL
they took well over 40 days before calling my references
