RPAL....waiting sucks

Get your references to call in rather than waiting. Make sure they are legit too. Nobody under 3 years or they better be good at telling stories. One of mine was 2 years 8 months and the first thing they asked was if she had known me for 3 years or more. She said just about 3 years and they pretty much hung up on her, sent me a letter 3 weeks later saying they needed a new reference.

6 months after the rpal course... got approved..

Wife has been waiting 12 months for hers. Calls in once a month. She's getting ready to start ipsc but I guess she'll only be practicing when I take her.

Wow.. some long waiting times there. I don't understand what's taking so long for some and not others. I had my non restricted first, so possibly mine took less time than others because of that, but still, I actually think mine was less than 6 weeks.. taking a year is very unusual unless they're having trouble getting in touch with references possibly.

edit : Be very careful who you use as references. I made sure both my references were no-nonsense kinda people that had known me forever as a firearm user and were likely to answer their phone instead of letting it go to voice mail. I suspect that if they get a no-answer or voicemail, your application goes to a list for a re-try at a later date. How many times that happens before they contact you, I have no idea, if it happens at all.

Remember that "just the facts, ma'am" is not only a time worn cliche from some old movie, but a very relevant statement in this context.

IMO, the less said the better, remaining professional and clear of course. If I used Aunt Susie as a reference, who thinks I'm a wonderful person but has no clue about firearm safety, that's not a good reference to a police officer who's trying to assess whether it's safe to let me buy a gun or not.

I'd suggest trying to use people who are already RPAL holders, don't have a criminal record, and can hold a clear concise conversation without blathering on about this and that. They should answer the questions that are asked, not volunteer information about you.

Whether that will help, I can't say. I can say for sure that it won't hurt.

I quadruple checked my application to make sure I wasnt missing anything. I checked with both my references, and explained they cant screen out the calls. One has known me for 8 years, almost 9, and the other forever. I asked them both to call this week, so we will see.

Upgrading from PAL, took class Jan 9, sent everything on Jan 11th, they received on Jan 14th, and today (Feb 2nd) went to processing and my references called in. I could have it soon!

Great stuff that's not really a long time to wait

I sent mine in sometime in early October. They called my references in November, released it to the cfo for sask in December. I received it last week. Bought a handgun on Tuesday and picked them up Thursday so at least that went quick.
