Hi all. Just purchased my first AR. Went with the RRA Elite CAR A4. After reading through some posts, I've done all the prepping that needs doing and am ready to go shoot. First match at our club is this weekend, but I won't be ready to attend as I haven't even shot it yet.... So in the mean time, I've been thinking about accessories.

Sling, optics and perhaps a bipod of some sort to start. This would be for service rifle matches.

Sling. Don't know much about them other then the ones on my hunting rifles/shotguns, but have used a 3 point on my buddy's work C8 and found I liked it. Now I'm hearing a one point is all you need. Opinions?

Optics. I've used an Eotech holo sight and was surprised at how accurate it seemed. In the rain though? Budget would be $500 give or take a hundred...or so..:D What are your thoughts? Again, this would be for service rifle matches.

Bipod. Perhaps a simple handguard bipod?

I appreciate any and all opinions.

Thanks

My vote would go to the Aimpoint for ruggedness and the worry-free battery life.

Sling? Vickers.

Bipod? Harris seems to be the most flexible.

I can't offer any advice on the micros (or the other aimpoints), although I'm considering one for an M14 build I've got under way.

As far as Eotech goes...nothing but thumbs up from me. I've got one that's lived on my shorty AR, and now resides on my 9mm AR. Great piece of kit. I like the super-quick acquisition of the 65 MOA ring, combined with the precision of the 1MOA dot.

You may want to consider something with some magnification for service rifle shoots. That's not to say that you can't compete with an Eotech, but I know that I prefer a bit of magnification out past 100 meters. Something in the 3-4X range would probably work well.

I think that Koldt started a thread somewhere in this forum about a 3X or 4X magnifier he mounted behind his Eotech. This also gives you the advantage that you can buy half of your optic now, and half later when you have some more money.

IM actually buyin a LMTAR15 myself. So hopefully I'll be joining the club as well... I suggest first learning to shoot it with iron sights before going with an add on sight.

Im going with a cheap Aimpoint for now untill I can pay this off :D

I'll snap a few tonight.

w squared, thats quite the setup Koldt has. Something to look forward to as I'm pretty much for sure going with an EOtech.

Thanks again guys.

Here are a few pics. I'm not the best photographer.

Trigger seems pretty crisp dry firing, but I won't know for sure until I shoot it this weekend.

Don't know exactly what will become of the "Tactical carry handle" as it's called. It'll probably end up on the EE or in my extra stuff bin after I install some optics. Still trying to figure out which route to go with that.

I'll probably need some magnification if I'm going to compete. Love the setup Koldt has, but it seems the magnifiers are pretty hard to find.

I'm just happy I finally took the plunge. Been wanting an AR for years.

I'd like like to see what optics one would use. I guess it acts as a riser and you use low profile scope rings? One good thing is if the optic goes down, it slides off forward quickly and rear sight remains.

I'm thinking I'll just take it off if I go with an EOtech. It would probably end up being too high otherwise. Have to do some testing after I make up my mind.
