I see many of you have the rubber buttpad on your M-14's. I'm not sure whether to get one: is it hard like a hockey puck, or soft and absorbing like a Limbsaver pad on a hunting rifle/shotgun?

I know they are cheap, $15 or something, but I'd rather get an idea if I should bother or not!

They are alot lighter than the metal butt pad and quieter when used in a metal treestand when resting the rifle with the butt down .
If you go to a rubber pad you will need a longer bottom screw and I found the thread to be a weird pitch..so I had the lower swivel retreaded to a comman thread pitch and found a longer bolt to match {a long screw would work too}...I then cut a screw driver slot in the head and took a grinder to the sides to make the head of the bolt round on the sides...then painted the head.
The upper screw is just a wood screw on my Polytech and the original one still worked .

I'm quite happy with mine. I have a bad shoulder and I was starting to anticipate the recoil making for poor shooting.
Made the difference for me over the sharp edges of the steel one.
I didn't mess with new screws, just push a bit and the bottom screw will start, with the fine thread I'm sure you could keep turning the screw in enough to tear the rubber, just go till the sling loop is tight.

The fit is poor, the top tab wanted to keep popping out. I put a short screw in to the rubber, sort of like a pin that slips inside the stock as you install to hold the top tab down.

I put mine on a 2009 polytech synthetic stock
and it was around $33 tax and shipping incl to ont. I liked the pad but the fit wasnt the best as it didnt fit at the top of the butt very well. It stuck up about 1/4 inch or so...maybe with some more trimming of the stock or pad it would fit better.

I recently bought a USGI stock that came with a rubber pad already on it and the fit was much better
