rubber scope skin became tacky

I had a Tasco EXP ( wide angle objective ) did that, left me black hands everytime I touched it.

Best way is remove the rubber coating, it will never go back. No matter how much you de grease it, etc it will always be tacky and start coming off.

Same here. Had a camcorder, red dot and some other rubberized items become tacky. Not sure they startd breaking down from aging or from oils. I don't think there is any way to restore it. I was tempted to scrape the rubber finish off.

I used goo gone and elbow grease and removed it.

Thanks, might have to try that. I have a 25yr old rubberized binoculars that are still holding up. Guess it depends on the rubber formula used.

Yeah mine was a Tasco EXP, Had to be 15 + years old. Guess oil and heat got to it and became sticky. Prolly from gun cases that oil, carbon and corrosive residue seeped into the gun foam. But I dried it out, then used goo gone and started to rub it off...

My leica rangefinder has about 50% of the rubberized coating flaked off. It's either in my truck or in my pocket, never in the case. It has not been abused at all, but still flakes and peels...
