I have one, it shoots the Hornady 170 flat nose quite well, also the 150 SP. Question is can the Hornady 150 SP be driven fast enough in 30-30 to expand and perform on White tail?

Yes... I've done it a few times with a No.1-A .30/30... should not have sold it. I am using a No.1-A Brit now with the 150 SP.

Id shoot the 150gr SST or Nosler BT. At 2300 fps MV, they should expand just fine out to 275 yards (1800 fps). To really stretch out the No1 30-30, maybe look at Nosler`s 168gr Accubond LR, which will expand down to 1300 fps. With a MV of 2100 fps, they should expand out to 650 yards. at 300y, they would land with 1700 fps & 1080 ft lbs of energy. Thats deadly

It’s a damn near perfect No.1A cartridge, the rim’s nice in a single, and you’re no longer limited to blunt factory bullets designed for tubular mags. Should be able to really wake her up with Bartell’s advice there. But to the original question it will certainly kill deer reliably further than you’ll want to shoot it.

My question is more centred around if the 150 Hornady will expand at the velocities the 30-30 is capable of launching it at.

The 150gr SP like the OP is suggesting is a pointed tip bullet and would not be recommended for a tubular mag.

He means the Ruger No.1 can take stouter loads than the published tube magazine loads. Not sure if the brass is up to the challenge.

hey bunny...any reason why you are using tube magazine loads ? in a single shot like what you have, you can do more advanced loads and get better performance.

Where did he say that he is using "tube magazine" loads? He asked if the .30/30 loads the No.1 is capable of will produce good terminal ballistics with the Hornady 150 SP.

Here is the load that I used in my No.1-A.

I have been shooting the 170 FP because I have many boxes of them and they shoot well, also performance is a given.
But I also have a few thousand Hornady SP, they also group well, I just wasn’t sure if the much tougher SP would expand at 30-30 velocities, reports here are that they should, the Nosler ballistic tip would be better, but I have the Hornady’s and lots of LVR powder so that’s what I want to use. The 30-30 is a nice light little gun, I topped it with a VX2 1-4x.
My next experiment is to try the 30-30 with the 220 RN, for work as Walrus defence.
Considering I have about 30 rifles more suitable for walrus, one must consider the theory of facing one of the biggest critters, with huge tusks by going with a possibly underpowered single shot , this is CGN after all.

Sounds like you need to shoot some milk jugs filled with water and backed with something to "catch" the bullet Bunny.

Ruger#1 in 30-30 sounds like a practical combination.
