Ruger #1 30-30 dilemma....

I was going to say 30-303, but you already have a 303 in the cupboard.

How about a 7x65R necked up to .308? I've read the 7x65 is similar to a 7x64 in performance...so necking it up would give you something unique with 30-06 performance.

There is also the 30R blaser, but brass might be a problem for that one.

A 30/40 is probably the best option. You can shoot factory ammunition. You can load it to standard levels or to levels beyond what a 308 will achieve. A 30/30 AI won't even come close. The 30/303 is poor choice only because it can't use factory ammo. The 30/303 Epps works quite well and is essentially a rimmed 30/06 as far as performance is concerned but with the added benefits (?) of fire-forming and expensive dies. I have various rifles chambered for all of these cartridges so I have some experience.

As an eastern deer rifle, I am still liking the Krag alot.
 
Ye can't go wrong with the Krag. It's plenty capable of doing the job on big critters and is an inherently accurate round in a well made rifle. Bullet selection is beauty for handloaders & the 1 in 10 twist of the No.1 will allow for launching bullets in weights from 85-220+gr depending on loads desired for the purpose. My 30-40 Ruger No.3 was a good shooter back in the 70's & nice to carry, but proper stocking would have been much nicer.;)

Oh... he still wants a No.K1-A.30/30... I thought this was simply a change-up to differ from the new factory offering...
If that is the case, I would just stick with the British that you listed... or rebarrel to a SS.358 and chamber for .356 Win. That would be a useful pair. I have the A's in .303 & .35W... which is essentially the same + a smidge.
 
To me, the dilemma here is why people own .30-30's.:nest:

Now that I've infuriated and alienated everybody on the thread...I do have a serious suggestion/question. Would it be reasonable to re-chamber to .303British, and then reload .303 brass with .308-cal bullets to take advantage of the wide variety available? The barrel could be carefully and properly marked, to prevent folks from loading and firing original-spec .303 ammo in the gun. I've often toyed with this idea...any perspectives on this?
