Ruger #1 30-30 dilemma....

Now that I've infuriated and alienated everybody on the thread...I do have a serious suggestion/question. Would it be reasonable to re-chamber to .303British, and then reload .303 brass with .308-cal bullets to take advantage of the wide variety available? The barrel could be carefully and properly marked, to prevent folks from loading and firing original-spec .303 ammo in the gun. I've often toyed with this idea...any perspectives on this?

That was suggested three or four times above.

To me, the dilemma here is why people own .30-30's.:nest:

Because it is a cool little round... only vanilla in a lever action... and loaded in a No.1, with spire point bullets and a full case of LVR it ain't your "grampas turdy-turdy."

Oops! Point taken; I will read the entire thread from now on before opening my yap.

It ain't my .45-70 either; can't imagine where I would want it in place of the .45-cal. round. But obviously lots of folks like it. :)

The only reason to chamber a 303 in a 30 caliber barrel is because 311 barrels are not as commonly available. The drawback to this is that what was possibly the most common cartridge in Canada is now a wildcat with no factory ammunition available. In addition, not all dies will reduce the 303 neck sufficiently to hold a 308 bullet (if anyone chimes in and says you only have to change the expander ball, I swear, I'll hire a young man to give them a slap). 303 brass is quite thin in the neck and even a 308 winchester die won't always size that neck down enough. By the way, none of this is speculation; I have 303's in 30 cal barrels and 311's. I also have several 30/40's.

In this case, he is rechambering for an existing .308 bore from .30/30 up to .30/40 Krag or .30-303 etc... the bore is not in question, only the cartridge it will be chambered for. Dies are not an issue, Lee list the .30-303 as a factory custom option. In this particular case, I think .30-303 is a very good option... a K1-A version would both be unique and useful.

Do not know if it is possible but I think the H&H in a #1 Would be the ultimate. I would think the 300 HH in this rifle would be close to a 1 off .

Nope, Ruger chambered the No.1 in .300 H&H. I think I remember that member Track took a nice Pronghorn (or maybe Muley??? Old age...) with a No.1 in .300 H&H.

Thanks to the OP I now have a nice number 3 in 30/40 Krag. Looking forward to plink with it this summer. Thanks DG!
