Ruger #1 303 British - now what powder? (Post #43)

I had one, was accurate enough for my purposes. I bet was a 1.5moa gun on avg. I sold it to fund some other stuff, but it was a fun rifle to own

I agree that the Ruger 1 intersts me mostly in rimmed cartrdiges, which is why I bought one in 303. I've always liked the Ruger #1 platform, but most of the cartrdiges offered I would like better in a bolt gun.

I tried all sorts of bullets rom 123gr .311 for the 7.62x39 to 215gr Woodleighs and many in between.

Overall, my rifle was a 1.25-1.5 MOA rifle, which is more than accurate for hunting purposes. I really liked the rifle, but it wasn't a great fit for my style of hunting so I sold it to a friend. it's funny, many hunters like to have many hunting rifles, but I am the opposite. I have dozens and dozens of guns I use at the range but I only like to have a few hunting rifles.

Overall, if you like the Ruger #1, you like the .303 British and you like to hunt with them, then it's hard to go wrong.

Mine has had a NECG sight, then a Skinner and now has a basic 4x scope. With the peep sights, 2-3 inch groups were common. With the scope, I get 1.5 to 2 inch at 100 yds.
Good enough for hunting deer and moose around here.
My Ruger #1 in 303 British is not a target rifle. It is a hunting rifle and is acceptably accurate at the ranges that I shoot at game. My go to bullet is the 174 gr Hornady RN.
The rifle is an absolute joy to carry in the field and is chambered in a round I have become very fond of and have a great deal of respect for. I also shoot the 303 out of a couple of Ross MKIII's and R10's and a LE No4 Mk2.
I agree with many of the comments about the 303 and 30-40 Krag being great cartridges for the #1.
I bought the #1 because of the chambering and because of the CGN initiative through Prophet River to get Ruger to chamber the rifle in the 303 British. It is the only #1 I own.

I like Gatehouse's last comment.

Even though I'm still sore from the tax man, I decided I better buy it. Now something has to go to pay for it. :(

So let's get down to business, can someone recommend me a classic (and readily available) reliable hunting bullet?

Try the Hornady 150 SP or the 174 RN... Flat base, slightly oversize ().312 in). Alternatively, you might be able to get some Remington bulk 180 grainers.

So what scope does the 303 deserve?

I have a 1-4x20, and a 2.5-8x36.

I'm not opposed to buying a different scope if it would better suit the cartridge...

I USED A 2.5-8X36 on mine, and it seemed a good choice, although this is one the rare times I would think a 1-4x20 is a good fit, as the Ruger #1 is such a nice streamlined unit.

The 1-4 in lower rings will work perfectly. I put a 1.5-5 on mine. Yours should fit the same.

I'd plant the 1-4 on it DB. It'll be great out to 300 at that magnification and show close up.
What a fantastic rifle to own!

I'm a fan of Sierra's in the 303, and would choose the 180gr Prohunter. You can easily match .308 Win factory ballistics with that setup.

I used to be all about magnification and hardly considered anything under 3-9x. I have recently come to realize the benefits of having a lower magnification optic, there are times when 3x is just too much and how often have I used 9x when not at the range? Not often! 1-4x gets my nod. Should be able to hit out to 200yrds no prolblem!

I had the now discontinued Vortex 2-8x32 Diamondback HP on mine. Loved the massive 4.6" ER which works well on the No1's rib. Since I sold my 303 I put that scope on my No1 300wm

Rifle arrived this morning and although very plain, the wood is nicer than expected. I have to buy lower rings though - why they supply them with #5's is beyond me. :(

I still haven't fired my #1 .303Brit, although 1-4x was the direction in which I was leaning.

The most magnification I've put on a .303British is 6x, (e.g. a Weaver Classic K6, a B&L Elite 1.5-6x or a Bushnell Trophy 1.5-6x) and I've never felt it needed more. A 4x is enough.
