Ruger #1 303 British will be made!

Well folks, the original .303's had a brass disk on the side of the butt with the regimental ID stamped in it. Perhaps we could go that route. Get a coin struck and have it embedded in the butt. Sorry, gonna have to wait until summer. Revenue Canada wants money first. I'm in, but have to wait.

Maybe I'm slow. Maybe I'm dumb. Maybe I'm un-Canadian. But.... Serious question... What is the appeal? Is it the accuracy? I'm just not sure why a #1 in .303 seems so in demand?

Single shot anything isn't my bag, admittedly, but what does .303 give you that .308 or any other modern non-rimmed cartridge give? I'm assuming nostalgia?

seeing what you have said, i doubt you will understand.

Hey Ben No.1's are my favorite rifle just behind the pre 64 Model 70 I have owned 10or12 No.1's they are a excellent rifle its the 303 Britt I can't rap my head around.

Too bad. I thought we were going to get something special. Possible custom configuration, custom serial number and limited production. I would have gladly paid extra. Now its just another Ruger 1-A :(. I don't think I will order one. There seems to be many people still happy to get a common Ruger in .303 British. So not a total loss in time & effort. Thank you Clay.

Educate me. I'm not trying to be a #### - I'd honestly like to know the appeal! I own (or have owned) about every type of rifle/handgun/shotgun under the sun, but this one I don't 'get'. I'm no gun-snob /calibre snob either.

If Remington started offering a 700 in .303 brit, would it be the same interest? Is the in the fact it's a Ruger? Cuz it's a #1t? .303? The single shot part? The accuracy? All of the above?

The reason I'm asking is because when I saw the title of the thread, I thought.. 'well, THIS will be a bomb!', but I'm finding out that was a foolish assumption. Seriously - I'd like to know why there is so much interest!

Either way - good on ya SakoAlberta for knowing your customer base! I would NEVER have guessed there would be this much interest! :D

It's a type of rifle once made famous by likes of gunsmiths like John Farquharson of England, who built quality hunting rifles. Now these rifles are pretty much unobtainable to the common man. The .303 is a quality cartridge that is very under rated by most younger shooters both because of the marketing of newer cartridges & because most of the rifles that can be found that shoot this cartridge are simply military or sporterized milsurps. Usually not much lack luster in there appearance but yet quite servicable.
If you don't understand the history of the .303 in Canada & the rest of the Commonwealth, well you have a ton of reading ahead of you to get up to speed to the choice of the .303.... A few people have chimed in about other cartridges designed in Canada, but none are commercially available. So trying to market such a rifle would be to reloaders only.
Hope this answers your question as to why a Number 1 in .303.

Here is what I said on the other thread:

I've always wanted a RUger #1, ...just never enough to buy one chambered in most cartridges (especially rimless cartridges) because I'd prefer it in a bolt action. All the rimless cartridges from .22 Hornet to .585 Nyati- I'd rather have in a bolt action...

However, I do like the .303 British cartridge, and, short of spending some good $$$ on a bolt action complete custom job, it's really only available in the big and heavy Enfield rifles or the SMLE.

So the rimmed .303 makes perfect sense in the #1, it's a great cartridge, it's got lots of Canadian history, and I know I will take it out to hunt blacktails on nice days, and I expect many will use it for all sorts of other beasts across Canada.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to buy into this, I don't really care what others feel are the best choice for themselves, but for me, this is the first time i've said "RUger #1 is the RIGHT choice" :)

(And if Remington offered it in a Mdl 700, no it wouldn't have the same appeal. May as well just get a .308, which would probably feed better, too)

A ruger #1 is a lovely rifle. Many people would like one, but some would not justify the price for a single shot rifle, as much as they may like it, they often choose other rifles, particularly bolt action (from my experience)

I think there is a Nostalgia/Patriotism/Pride factor at work here as well

.. the cartridge that has taken more game in NA (second only to the 30/30...maybe), ...and attatched to it, all the pride and honor of the Canadian forces and Canada itself...offered in a unique modern rifle which will call your bluff on marksmanship...

I'm not sure that there is another cartridge that would have such wide appeal to so many Canadians.

There is something to be said for the marketing of a feeling...(or simply the uncovering of what was always there)

I know all about it.

When you take that .303 brit cartridge in hand, see that stamp, and put it in your rifle, there is a lot more happening than just the simple loading of a gun,
...or at least there is for me.. and a quality rifle in hand while doing it, brings it all full circle, the perfect balance of the past and present.

well for me, I previously had a No1 and sold it, and miss it. Been thinking of getting another for a while but just never did it. 303 is a cool cartridge, but I'm not a fan of the Enfields for hunting. Perfect match for me.

I gotta say ditto and I'm an Enfield fan, got a few sporters and am looking for a numbers matching un####ed #1.

I think people have mostly answered it. Just two things to add though. To my eye the #1s in their various configuration have very pleasing lines.

You asked about accuracy too: nope. They give perfectly adequate hunting accuracy, but with the two piece stock design, an accuracy fanatic will get frustrated. This isn't to say there isn't accuracy potential. I have a #1 in 22 K-hornet, and so long as it isn't humid out it is sub-moa easy - on a hot August day that it's a shotgun.

All good stuff, but since when did the .22 Hornet become rimless? Have I missread this or have you misstyped something you were thinking?

Cheers, Bob
