I need advice...I have purchased a Ruger #1 303Br as a gift for my son. I already have a Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40 wide angle scope. Can I have it mounted on the Ruger...I think he will use it for hunting deer & maybe bear...I am not a hunter so I need advice as to a scope that will work for him...thanks for your advice ...

Your putting a WalMart scope on a special run rifle. It will work, but that rifle is deserving of a Leupold, or a Burris at the least.

Any scope will work, but IMO, you have a bit too much magnification for the type of hunting normally done with a 303. Personally, I would put a VXII in 2-7x33mm on it. Like I said though, that is just my opinion.

Most scopes don't have enough eye relief to use on Ruger #1 & #3's at the higher powers unless you use Rugers extension rings.. Anyway that's been my experience owning 6 of the buggers..
I use a cheap Bushnell Banner 3X9 Shotgun scope with major eye relief to work up loads then go to open sites or NECG peep or use a old Burris 1 3/4X5 with a looong tube..
The front bead on the Rugers is also quite small and you my want to order a white bead replacement from NECG is you plan on using open sites.. The same white bead can be had from Brownells..
Just a heads up if you are planning on using your Ruger .303 for hunting this season..

You are all inconsiderate bastards.. Do none of you just think .. Wow what an amazing present from a father to a son... :)

My parents have always had thoughtful gifts but I would flip if I got one of these.

After all of that, I would recommend something like the VXII in 2-7x33mm. :)

Unless you want to invest in a set of extension rings for your Ruger, you need a scope with lots of eye relief. Leupold is about as good as it gets. Leupold's new Redfield line has loads of relief also...might be worth a try. Regards, Eagleye.

Firstly, OP - I want to compliment you for being such a great father. We all wish our dad's would do that for us. I trust he will be very thankful.

Secondly, if money were on the tighter side, I might recommend a nice fixed power classic scope such as a weaver k-series or perhaps a leupold fixed power M8/FX series in either 4x or 6x. Great classic scopes for a rifle that was born to be a classic.

I want thank everyone for their imput & I think that I will contact Clay & if he has not shipped my son's rifle I will ask him to mount a scope on it...I wonder if he is reading this...I am very proud of my son who has done 2 tours in Afanghanistan & in January he & his wife made me a grandfather....lots of reasons to be proud....thanks everyone...

Wow, guess he deserves the scope rifle combo! ;)
