I was recently gifted a Ruger1-A Light Sporter 2010 Dom in 257 Roberts. I have a Leupold VXIII 3 1/2 x 10 X40 Scope to Install.I want to install as low as possible, which Ruger Rings should I order? Obviously no Rings came with the Rifle. Respectfully Jim

You will probably need the #4B rings... #3's will be too low, even with #4's the objective bell may contact the fold down sight, depending on the scope location/length, sometimes the rear leaf has to be removed. I usually use the offset #4 ring for the rear mount to allow shifting the scope rearward... it is commonly known that the Ruger ring slots are milled a little too far forward on the No.1's.

Ruger ring slots are milled just fine if you are a tall guy.An offset ring shouldn't be required if you are a stock crawling tall guy like myself.
Leupolds tend to have more eye relief which will help mount the scope.
A little vignetting will help with a consistent cheek weld.

I see rings are on order,never-mind.lol

Got 2 Medium Extension 1" Rings...Fits a VXIII 3 1/2 X10 Perfect...Thanks for the Extension Tip Hoyt...My Buddy WRB had a pair extensions...They work good.

I'm 6'4"... I still need the extension ring for the rear mount on standard eye relief scopes... this also grabs the scope at a better location rather than jammed up against the turrets.

It's the 40mm objectives that I dislike. The 2.5-8x or 3-9x with 33mm objectives just look better to my eye especially on a trim rifle. But I just dislike 40mm objectives as a general rule.

Ok guys, I installed the Ruger Medium Extension Rings and VXIII 3 1/2 X 10....Loaded up some old stock Hornady 87 gr Pointed SP I had on hand, 43.5 gr of IMR 4350 COAL 2.91"...Load everything in Kubota, and over to the Range on the Back Hundred...I'm 300 lbs, heavy neck and shoulders, have to really fight to get useable relief, with a light jacket. I need the scope back another inch....SUGGESTIONS...I do have a VXIII 1 3/4 to 5 (or whatever) sitting in a box, and it hear what you are sayin "UGLY" but I have lotsa big fields of clover and deer plots, and I like bigger scopes for longer ranges...but I can't live with the relief I have...The rifle shot excellent, I was ringin a gong at 250 like strumming a guitar, just fighting relief steady, doubt I coulda hit a runnin deer. Oh and my CGN friend Deerfarmer showed up while we were shootin, of course he had a new Tikka in 6.5x55 with a 2 1/2X 8 VXIII Leupy He was Ringin the gong at 250 an jus grinnin'. Oh Hoyt I was shootin the NEF Hornet, didn't I get that from you??? It was ringin the gong at 250 like the other ones, kinda, it's a real fun rifle

Hmm... I wonder if you wouldn't be better with a shorter LOP? Leupold tends to have pretty generous eye relief. Maybe pick up a spare buttstock and cut it off 1" short and install a plate rather than a pad. then you have the option to put the rifle back to original condition if you decide to peddle it.

Ouch...cut that beautiful walnut...is there no other way of getting scope closer to my eye? What about different makes, I have Zeiss, and S and B , but they are even bigger, I think I'll look at the VXIII 1 3/4x 5. I have advanced arthritis, and am not very flexible anymore, that's a lot of the problem too. Respectfully Jim

Right ...... Small rifles need a small scope. Big scopes on small rifles look goofy and detract from proper handling.

Agreed ... I have a Leupold VX-2 3-9 x 33 Ultralight EFR on my Model 64 Anschütz sporter. Perfectly to scale ...

I agree Guys...I just pulled a brand new VXIII 1 3/4 X 5 out, get exactly same relief, not enough, I also tried a Leupy M8 x4 and a couple older B and Ls out of storage, the eye piece is within 1/8 inch on all, and the Leupy generous relief still isn't enough. Do they make a " more extended" base for Rugers? I wish I could do pics, and KAMLOOPY my buddy is at a gun show, where are your friends when ya need em? LOL Thanks for input Guys, I gotta git this thing goin, it was willed to me by a CGN member. Respectfully Jim

That's why I suggested buying a second butt stock. Chopping beautiful walnut is sacrilegious. The other way to stretch your neck is rather less fun.

Google shows some Piccatiny style rails, as well as, and instead of, the Ruger Stock Rib, Anybody tried these? In checking with other Ruger #1 owners, Relief problems, are common...

Huntdon from CGN found the BEST ANSWER. Leatherwood Ruger #1 Mount Part # RNO1MT. It's simple and strong. And then you can go down one step lower in rings. It's Picatiny on top, and you have Tons of relief adjustment, and can use ANY Weaver STYLE Rings.I can't send pics, but if you email me I can provide a pic. deerdr@nbcsmail.com
