Here is a link to the Mount noted above... ugly as sin to my eye...With one extension ring in the rear position and a normal ring in the front position, I am comfortable with standard eye relief scopes... I would be inclined to go with a long eye relief shotgun type scope before I used that picatinny contraption on my clean Ruger 1's...

As far as scope sizes go... I find that Leupold 3-9X40mm scopes are pretty trim and look balanced on my No.1-A 7X57... The VX-2 1-4X20mm on my No.1-S .45/70 looks balanced also... so there is a range of scopes that look appropriate on No.1's. On my new No.1-A .30/30 I mounted a VX-2 3-9X33 Ultralight and like the set-up a lot... this is the lightest scoped No.1 that I have owned... a very nice little package.
Hey Doc... how about the scope in the link below??? It gives you another inch of eye relief and if you save the $140 that you would have spent on that monstrosity of a picatinny rail, this scope looks like a great deal... the 2-7X33mm would be perfect.

I also have one of these (link below), Nikon shotgun scopes on an H&R Ultra .45/70 and it has proven to be an excellent optic... the 5" eye relief will give you an additional 1.5" of relief over the Leupold's that you tried...
