I have been thinking of getting a Ruger #1 sometime in the new year. I was thinking in one some wheres from a 25-06 to the 338 win mag.

so if you where going to get a single shot rifle what would you have it chambered for. If it matters the rifle will be used for hunting as well as shooting holes in paper.

#1

I've had a #1 International 7X57 and now just have one in .303 Brit. If I were to get another it would be .300 H+H. Contact Clay at Prophet River. He has a great selection.

You can't go wrong with just about any of the big-game chamberings--Clay has a good selection of calibers. If I didn,t already have a couple of bolt-action 300 H + H rifles I would snap up a No. 1 in a heartbeat. 7x57 makes nice hunting/target rifle in the No.1.
I presently have .303 and a .250 savage in the No. 1 and they are both in my "keeper" pile.

The only No. 1 chambering that I would never own again is the .375 H+H--off the bench it is the nastiest recoiling rifle I have ever shot--416 and 458 are much more pleasant in comparison.

44Bore.

I have two #3's and my sixth #1 in on the way 458WM,35 Whelen,30-06,25-06, 45-70, 9.3x74R [on the way] Every one of them shoots under moa. I would have to say my favorite so far is the 25-06 its extremly accurate with mild recoil.

I have one in a 404 Jeffery.

NICE!!

Over the years I have owned many and always looking for another one just don't know what..... Too many caliber and configuration options now.

Currently down to only 2
- RSI 7X57 which I think I might sell as I have a custom Mauser in that cartridge that I love..... and will never sell.
- #1A in 257 Roberts which I picked up on CGN a few weeks back and shot a nice 8 point buck with it last Sunday, so very happy with it right now!!

I have a couple, a 303 and a 450/348 AI.
The 450 is an awesome shooter considerably more than a 45-70, slightly less than a 458 Win. Mag. and is very accurate with any cast bullet I've tried.
And it has more than enough recoil to please the toughest shooter.. :)

I was getting tired of stainless/synthetics I normally use so I have this #1A in 30/06 coming.

Buttstock was cut a bit short so another, longer pad is in the works. Would have gone with a 303 but the bore size issue kept me off.

Why would the 375 be harder to shoot than the 416 and 458?
