Ruger #1 I want one

I have three, a stainless 1A 7x57 is my favourite of the lot, but I also have another blued 1A 7x57 that I should sell and a 1S in 45-70 that is like new but doesn't get used either. I should look for a nice trade somewhere.

I have one in 458WM. If I was getting another it'd be in a rimmed case. The #1 is all about nostalgia and to me a Farquarson should be in a rimmes case.
 
Have 3, 243 in a RSI, 375 H+H in 1T and , thanks to Dances with Empties and Clay, a 303. Next, I like to add something odd. Agree with 300 H+H or something rimmed. And if it's full wood, that much more so. Yes, I'm a wood whore.

The #1 I had in .416 Rigby shot better than any big cartridge rifle has a right to. It had some issues that needed resolving, like insufficient eye relief with the factory quarter rib, so I had a custom rib made which was inletted for Talley QD rings, and this put the ocular of the 1.5-5X Leupold even with the front of the falling block. Thus the scope couldn't hit me regardless of which position I fired from and there was nothing in the way of the loading ramp. The biggest problem I found was that the rifle had a nasty habit of coming off safe after a few hours of carrying it slung. The idea of the thing firing with the muzzle a couple of inches from my ear, when slung muzzle up or towards a companion's legs when slung muzzle down was a real concern. The only way to carry it in a state of readiness was loaded with the safety on, when I tried to carry it out of battery, I just decorated the tundra with expensive Rigby handloads, which of course I never found. I never did resolve the safety issue. I went through a couple of stocks which split under recoil, until I realized it had to be bedded as the factory bedding was uneven. I had the LOP shortened and a Decelerator installed at the same time. After I lost the rifle in a house fire, I opted to go back to a bolt gun, but I still admire #1s as the best looking off the shelf sporting rifle made today.
 
I'm not completely sold on their looks but I'd like to have the elephant one in 450/400. Prolly the only gun I could afford so chambered. 219 zipper or 218 bee would be fun as well

I found that the combination of the stock fit and weight of the rifle gave really high receoil velocity for me. I could only shoot 4 or 5 rounds off the bench before getting a really bad headache (whiplash). It might be just me--as I have an old auto accident neck injury.

I did find it odd that this was the only rifle/chambering that caused that problem though. I have had several bolt action .375's that didn't cause the problem nor did the No. 1 in 416 Rem or 458 win that I owned.

I recently scored an older one in .243 Win.

I'd like to get another in something like 7x57.

Nice rifles for sure, I`d have to sit with a bit of sipping whiskey and ponder for awhile on which cartridge i`d want. Likely be one of the old classics, an H&H of one persuasion or another. So many choices not enough bank account.
