Found a ruger #1 in 45/70 today and it looks like about 6.5 maybe 7 outta 10.
Was wondering what the value of it would be?Not crazy about the 45/70 part,But really like the ruger#1 part,,lol.
To be honest any 45/70 I have tried before were just cheapys(h&r,NEF)and never tried any
serious handloaing for them, cuz I was scared to blow them up,so kept them to a minimum load,
maybe one grain over min,lol.
BUT!!!heard you can load these up to maximum and not hurt them at all.
Think it might be a fun toy to load some lighter bullets in and hn some heavy ones for
cose up thick stuff hunting, and it nice and short also, not like my main hunting rifle is,
So thanxs for theopinions

The Ruger #1 is a neat rifle when chambered in .45-70. It is a lot of fun, but the rifle is light enough that hot loads hurt. I have a Limbsaver on mine, and with 400gr bullets at 2000fps are not pleasant. With 450gr bullets at a more gentle 1400-1500 fps it's a hoot.

Chris.

I have a Bunch of No.1's, including a .45/70. My favorite load is the 325 FTX at 2250 fps with H4198... which is not max, but it is a very accurate load. It does have a smidge of bite to it.

Ah; a little pepper makes the dish better, eh.
I don't mind a big bore punch to the shoulder; I'll take it over the piercing crack of a rank fast magnum any day.

Never owned a #1 but hopefully one will pop up to one of our dealer in 308 or 7mm... A nice brand new #1 is missing in my herd... JP.

I had loaded some heavy (500gr.IIRC) bullets to the max as a close range bear load, and decided to sight it in with a NECG aperature sight. I fired one round off sand bags not realizing how much muzzle flip there would be. The rifle jumped enough that the orange hockey puck Ruger calls a recoil pad pinched my man boob against the concrete shooting bench. It felt as though Arnold Schwarzenegger grabbed my nipple with vice grips, and decided to see how far it would twist.

At one round, it became my shortest range trip ever.

Confession is not only good for the soul... but entertainment also...

;)

A #1 in 45-70 can be loaded soft enough for even a young child to shoot, or loaded right on the heals of the .458 W.M. Load the 350 Hornady to 1800-2000 fps and you can kill anything that walks, anywhere on the planet.

In 70% condition, I would value that rifle at about $750. The .45/70 can be a very interesting rifle to own, load for, and shoot, particularly in a rifle as strong as the #1. Heavy long nosed 450 and 500 gr bullets, which cannot be utilized in the 95 Marlin due to it's action length. With any luck there is nothing more than cosmetic wear to the rifle, and that can be easily fixed.

After wiping my drink off of the monitor I almost had a wreck LMAO!!!
Did a similar thing with a buddies 12 guage and a soft touch stock ater he told me not too.
What a boob pinch!!! hurt for a week or so.
Thanxs fr the entertainment!!
Think I going to buy the gun and try it out!Especially the 500 gr loaded to max!!lmao

Your space bar is broken.
Like bunny says, .45-70 Number 1's are strong and can handle very hot loads. Or you can load it with Trapdoor loads. Ain't nothing like any H&R or NEF Hand-rifle.

I shot 405 cast until I ran out and then tried the 325 FTX since I had a couple boxes... I was pretty surprised by how accurate they were AND the improvement in trajectory.

This has gotten off topic.

OP, A new Ruger No 1 in 45-70 is sold by Prophet River, a banner supporter of the site, for $1499 plus taxes and shipping.

A good rule of thumb for realistic value is figure out the grade of your rifle which you have rated at 6/10.

Multiply 6/10 by $1499 and you get $899 as full value. If you want to sell it quick the $750 price would move it.

I am a fan of both the #1 and the 45-70. I don't doubt that you could sell it for $750 with ease. Mine (a 458 I bought because I wanted a single shot 45-70 and I lack impulse control) was $600 including dies and a couple of boxes of handloads but that was about 11 years ago and bought from a very small guy who, I'm guessing, had eyes bigger than his recoil tolerance.

First thing, with any big Ruger, is to swap out the recoil pad. For me this accomplishes two things. First it gives my a bit more LOP. Second it eliminates the pitiful excuse for a pad that comes stamped "Goodyear" on the inside (I #### you not).
