I just bought a brand new Ruger 10/22 with a synthetic stock (the 50th anniversary) and I would like swap the factory barrel for a Green Mountain sporter fluted barrel, but I'm not yet decided which length 16.5" or 20", any suggestions or advices? Main reason for the barrel change is I don't need iron sights and fluted barrels look cool. Also, I will probably change the stock too for an Promag Archangel or another "tactical" stock.

I read somewhere that a longer barrel may be slower than a shorter barrel from simple friction, is that true?

I will use the gun only for plinking.

IMO Sell the special ruger and just build a 10/22. Seems to me you bought a nice rifle and one that costs more than a stock 10/22. If your swapping all these parts. Please buy a stock ruger and mess with it.
Pleanty of aftermerket barrels. Depends on what length and if you want a bull barrel.
Tactical solutions has a great light barrel. Plus colored.
Dont mean to upset you but you did buy a gun that should be left alone.
Buy a honda civic and mess with it, not a special edition.

It's not a special Ruger, anything different than regular 10/22 other than the 50th anniversary etched on it, the price is the same.

Its still just a 10/22 hack it, burn it, paint it, dremel it, its just a tool. Firearms should never be collected they should be used. And no there is nothing different other than the burnt logo.
