In January I bought this Ruger 10/22 http://www.cabelas.ca/product/67755/ruger-1022-kryptek-raid-semi-automatic-rifle The only malfunction I had with that rifle was a failure to eject about 20 rounds in and the next 300 had no problems.
Since I got it I had put 325 rounds through it. Two days ago I bought the Butler Creek magazine (Steel Lips) and 500 rounds of Federal 22lr. I opened the packaging and went to put it in my rifle and to my surprise it didn't fit. I tried several times and it didn't work. After playing with it for a few minutes I got it in and out several time but it was tight. This leads to my first question. Is this normal for the magazine? Also, will this wear the composite coating on the rifle and slowly peal it apart?

After dealing with that disappoint meant I loaded the magazine for the first time and began firing. I think I had 8-10 malfunctions between failure to feed and failure to eject (most were failure to feed). The second time round it failed only 4-5 times. Still disappointed at this point I tried a third time. Only 3 failures. Fourth time only one failure. I am new to rifles with magazine, and especially new magazines. Is this relatively common, I have read that they take a few times to become reliable.

After I came back from shooting I loaded up the magazine a few times, and moved the action to eject the rounds a few more times. Would this help, or am I just wasting my time?

UPDATE: After going out two more times after keeping the mag loaded for a few hours first. I had no problems since then.

Try some diff ammo, rem golden bullets worked for me, you should leave them fully loaded for a week. You can also file the feed lips , where the bullet tip touches ( just a small amount).

I've had similar issues with ALL high cap mags. Tolerances are looser nowadays than they used to be. My bone stock 10/22 would run the 25 round butler creek mags ok, but hated the HC3R mags. Once I put on a dlask barrel, receiver, and a Boyds stock, it won't reliably feed anything except Ruger factory mags. I've never encountered a stock Ruger that's done that, but it doesn't surprise me, honestly.

I had to open up the magwell on my current 10/22 a bit for aftermarket mags. The tight fit could be causing the FTF issues. If the mag isn't situated properly it won't function properly.
I pulled the action out of the stock and used a flat file to take a bit off the inside sides of the magwell. Just enough to make for an easy insertion of the mags.

my dlask build using the ruger mags will load fine if i insert the mag with the bolt opened or closed. my HC3R mags NEED to have the bolt open when i insert them.

The Butler Creek mags are tight when they are new. Read the Sticky thread on 10/22s - the suggestion is to leave the mags loaded for 2-3 days when they are new, then shoot them. The springs need to loosen up a bit and the FTL issues go away. This worked for me and once my BC mags were 'broken in', I have had no issues whatsoever.

I think it just depends on the gun. My 10/22 Takedown will not work reliably with the BC mags no matter what. Every other round would jam using those.

Eventually I got fed up and bought a bunch of the Tactical Innovations TI-25 mags from IRG and once set up I have had zero problems since. YMMV. :)

I have two stock 1022's and both will take whatever mag I insert without any problems, whether its the stock 10 round, a 25 round BC, 30 round Eagle mag or the GSG 110 round drum. W eve used them many times and they dump themselves as fast as you can pull the trigger without a hitch.

Did exactly that and after 200-300 ran just fine therefter

My wifes 10/22 has had issues with the butler creek mags and I can vouch for leaving them loaded for a while, I actually leave them loaded all the time now and seems to have helped with feeding. Golden bullet seems to work great, cant run federal without constant feeding issues and 4 letter swear words.

I bought a 25rd steel lips to try and works excellent, just put em in and go with Fed auto match a couple hundred and only one stovepipe. Gonna get another mag and hook em together.

I have 6 steel lips mags. They've ran everything well that I've put in them (4 or 5 bricks of winchester wild cat, 1 brick of american eagle hollow points, and some reminton sub-sonic). I also left them loaded for a couple of days before the first time I used them as well.

good to know!! i just bought a 1022 and am in the proccess of buying some magazines ill be sure to leave them loaded for a couple days before shooting. thanks guy
