Ruger 10/22 cheaply made wood stock

My buddy just ordered a new ruger 10/22 with a wooden stock from cabellas.
He just got it in the mail a few days ago. "nothing against Cabellas" they are a good store.
wow what a crappy stock ! Its got a extremely light brown stock with real spotty looking Grains
The mag fits really loose as well. the stock it self weighs litterly nothing. Its like balsa wood.
Certainly nothing like the stocks of a few years ago.
he spent $550 after taxes . you sure dont get much for your money anymore.
He wishes he would of got the Synthetic stock instead,...but he wanted the traditional look "they use to have".
If it was mine I would Ditch the terrible stock for Anything else. wow what a shame.
Is this even real wood, or some sort of compressed saw dust with a fake print ?
He is utterly disappointed to say the least.
 
unfortunately he already fired it out his farm, so he is not sure if they would return it.
he is the kinda guy who hates conflict LOL
I would do it if it was mine for sure. are all the new stocks like this ? Obviously quality control has been tossed out the window.
 
I don't purchase many new guns period. Of that count only a few at BassPro/Cabelas . EVERY TIME I PURCHASED A FIREARM at BP or Cabelas I WAS ASKED TO INSPECT THE FIREARM PRIOR TO THE FINAL PAPERWORK. Ruger has been using birch/beech for their Carbine stocks since the early 80's when they phased out Walnut.

Sounds like buyers remorse. FYI last week he could have purchased that rifle on-line from one of the dealers on here for $369 plus tax. Free shipping.
 
They likely wouldn’t accept it for return or exchange anyway. They have a strict “all firearms final sale” policy. Also I recently heard for 2026 Ruger is updating the 10/22 design. Saw a video on Youtube on RimFireSS channel where he explains some of the changes. Anyone planning to buy one may want to wait until the updated versions are available.
 
Cab/BP never a real bargain. Too bad he had to get it 'mailed'. There are usually some 'good' 10/22s (oxymoron) on EE for reasonable prices. IMO the Sav A22 is a better, more accurate deal, even tho I never liked the one I had. My Sav 64 is a better rifle than a 10-22 IMO.
My suggestion is 'rattlecan it'. Make it camo or something . . .

10-22 Synthetic stocks are available on the EE …..

hmmm very interesting. just watched the video. I would wait and get the new model. some really good changes !

If he does not like this stock..there is plenty of take off available..but since it’s a farm gun..will buy a synthetic stock for all around durability.
Best thing will have have been to buy it ‘and on’ in a brick & mortar store.

Some of the changes are long over due, such as the auto bolt release for the bolt hold open. they now will come standard with their BX trigger which is another easy improvement. They also drilled a hole at the rear of the receiver so that a cleaning rod can pass through from the rear into the barrel when the stock is removed. They also tightened up the fit of the barrel going into the receiver and the barrels are coming a little shorter and threaded for muzzle devices.

Still no bolt hold open function on an empty magazine.

It's like 90% of all guns made now, over priced junk. Personally I wouldn't buy anything new at this point, look for something of quality made in the past.

The threaded barrel allows anything with matching treads to be attached.

Obviously in the Home land of the Elbozo, we can't have hearing safe firearms legally..... in other countries where their elbows and brains function normally this is either a choice or mandated for safety and nuisance reasons.

Compensators and Harmonic tuners would be other reasons, but the main reason many new rilfes in the market have shorter threaded barrels is the rising popularity of suppressors in the USA. Partially due to how useful they are and partly due to the govt making it easier.

Hardly anyone under the age of 40 is watching TV anymore.... but I take your point.
