I recently picked up my first 10/22. This is the Deluxe version with the walnut stock and without the front barrel band.

Is it normal to have that much wobble between the front stock and the receiver ie if I pinch the barrel to the front of the stock, I can feel the rear receiver lift a little.

I tightened up the receiver bolt a little bit more and the wobble reduced considerably. My god, the action was pretty gritty as well. Pretty shoddy quality if you ask me.

If this is all normal, I guess I'll be doing some polishing and bedding the action this weekend.

Mine had some movement in the stock and with an Allen key there was one full turn to a firm torque.
Since then I contacted Ruger and this is their response . . .

Ruger 10/22 Torque Settings

The scope base adapter screw should be torqued at 10 to 15 inch pounds, on the V-Block screws they should be torqued to 10 to 20 inch pounds and the Takedown Screw should be torqued to 15 to 20 inch pounds.

I haven't checked the setting on my takedown screw as it is shooting well at the previous setting.

Good to know. I'll torque it to those specs after I bed it this weekend. Thanks.

Man, that rail they give you looks like cheap cast pot metal. How well do they hold up?

Not sure, but there must be literally thousands of the supplied rails in use. I'm sure if there were any problems it would be announced to the world.

Factory rail on mine was slightly narrower than standard weaver & picatinny rail, I use Burris Zee rings and they would not clamp securely with specified torque, put on a Weaver rail to solve the problem.

Normal rings are not a problem with the Ruger rail.

Jeebus, 2 of those torque values sound high:

For the scope base, when you read up about torque for a #6 screw into aluminium, the recommended torque is 5-6 in lbs. I used 6 in lbs with blue loctite when I've installed scope bases on factory Ruger receivers.

For the V-block screws I've always done 18 in lbs with a 5/32 ball end hex bit.

For the takedown screw, I use 18 in lbs on a Dlask receiver with a Vantage RS stock (which has a pillar). From experience, 15-20 in lbs has a chance of crushing wood (ie pulling the brass escutcheon into the stock) or plastic if used on a stock without a pillar. For my 10/22 with factory plastic stock I use 10 in lbs.
